
Falcons Beat Monarchs 4-3 In A Shootout

March 20, 2009 - The Springfield Falcons earned a point in the standings for the fourth straight game beating the Manchester Monarchs 4-3 in a shootout in front of 3,161 at the MassMutual Center on Friday night. The Falcons have now gone to the shootout in four straight games going 2-0-0-2 in that span. Springfield has now earned a point in four straight games for the first time since they collected points in six straight contests from October 31 - November 14.
The night didn't start out perfect for the Falcons as Manchester opened the scoring at 5:53 of the first period when Brian Boyle tallied his 10th goal of the year. Springfield pulled even at 10:37 of the opening frame when Ryan Stone's slap shot beat Monarchs goaltender Daniel Taylor tying the score at 1-1 through 20 minutes of play.
The Falcons took their first lead of the night at 7:45 of the second period when Ryan Potulny scored on the power play, his 28th goal of the year. Manchester tied the score at 2-2 when Tom Preissing tallied on the man advantage at 15:26 of the middle frame.
With the game deadlocked at 2-2 into the third period, Potulny gave the Falcons a one-goal lead for the second time on the evening when he converted his team-leading 29th marker of the season at 6:38. With the Falcons holding on to a one-goal advantage, Manchester's Marty Murray sent the game to overtime with his 13th goal of the year with 1:02 remaining in regulation.
After a scoreless overtime, the Falcons were once again in a shootout. Rob Schremp and Potulny opened the scoring in the shootout on Springfield's first two shots, while goaltender Devan Dubnyk stopped four of five shooters earning the win in goal.
