Wheeling Nailers News Release

AUGUSTA, GA - Curtis Darling made a career-high 52 saves but the Augusta Lynx still wound up on top, beating the Wheeling Nailers 3-2 Wednesday night at James Brown Arena.

The Lynx jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals in the first period. Matt Christie redirected a Garrett Winder pass past Darling at 5:58 for his eighth goal of the season. A similar play resulted in a Matt Auffrey goal from Bobby Bolt and Louis Goulet at 15:57.

Wheeling cut Augusta's lead in half at 6:05 of the second frame. Matt Byrnes hit Joe Guenther with a pass in the slot, who one-timed it past Gerald Coleman for his fifth of the year and third since joining the Nailers.

Brian Yandle scored the eventual game-winning goal with only 8 seconds remaining in the second period. He blasted a slap shot past Darling from just below the right faceoff dot to put the Lynx up 3-1.

The Nailers were held off the scoreboard until the final minute of the third period. With the net empty and the extra attacker on, Byrnes scored his second goal in just his third game with Wheeling. Seamus Young's shot was blocked by Coleman but Guenther and Byrnes were there for the rebound.

Darling stopped 52 of the season-high 55 shots against the Nailers while Coleman made 21 saves in his first ECHL win of the year. Both teams were unable to score on the power play. Wheeling had five chances while Augusta had six.

Wheeling's five game road trip continues with a pair of games against the Gwinnett Gladiators on Friday and Saturday night. Both games are scheduled for 7:35pm.
