Bakersfield Condors News Release
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Bakersfield Condors came from behind by two goals in the third period to force overtime, but fell to the Victoria Salmon Kings in a shootout, 7-6, Tuesday night in front of 4,144 at Rabobank Arena in downtown Bakersfield. LW Mark Derlago recorded his first career hat trick as part of his four-goal performance tonight.
The Condors (13-22-9, 35 points) struck first just 19 seconds into the game when Derlago notched his 19th goal of the campaign after skating down to the crease and snapping the puck into the back of Victoria's net. RW Jason Kostadine followed suit just six minutes later with his third of the year, putting the Condors up 2-0 early. After Victoria got on the board with a slap shot goal from D Dylan Yeo, Derlago extended the lead back to two goals with his second tally of the period and 20th overall coming with only 26 seconds left in the first stanza.
The Salmon Kings (28-11-5, 61 points) wasted little time in the second period, erasing the two-goal deficit and taking a one-goal lead with three consecutive goals in the first 6:32 of the frame. RW Wes Goldie, LW Darryl Lloyd and C Derek Krestanovich were the goal-scorers for Victoria. D Patrick Coulombe added to Victoria's lead with a one-timer on the power play that slipped past Robinson for a 5-3 Victoria lead after two.
Derlago netted the hat trick by scoring on the power play 59 seconds into the third frame to cut into the Salmon Kings lead. Victoria's Ryan Wade regained the two-goal lead at 5:29 with his eighth of the season, but the Condors refused to go down without a fight. Derlago lit the lamp for a fourth time on the evening at 12:57, bringing Bakersfield within one. Just 1:04 later, F Sean Venedam capped the Condors comeback with a shorthanded tally, which sent the game to overtime and the shootout. Victoria prevailed in the shootout, outscoring the Condors 2-0.
Notes: LW Mark Derlago was named runner-up for the CCM Vector ECHL Rookie of the Month today. Second on the team in goals with 18 on the season, Derlago racked up 11g-3a-14pts in 11 games, including a team-record-tying seven game goal-scoring streak during January. Derlago's four-goal game tonight was the first four-goal game on home ice in Condors history. The Condors pulled within three points of the Phoenix RoadRunners tonight, who hold the final National Conference playoff spot.
