Gabinet Recalled to Springfield
February 6, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, SC - The South Carolina Stingrays and Head Coach Jared Bednar announced today that defenseman Mike Gabinet has been recalled to the American Hockey League's Springfield Falcons.
Gabinet, 26, has appeared in 23 games for the Stingrays this season, accumulating 14 points (2g, 12a) and 18 penalty minutes. He was obtained from the Idaho Steelheads on Dec. 12 in exchange for defenseman T.J. McElroy.
"It's definitely going to be a loss for us, but I'm excited to see him get a chance to play," Bednar said. "He's been out for a long time, working his way back. He's an extremely hard worker, and he's a dedicated guy. I'm sure it feels good for him to come back and get rewarded with a call-up."
Last season, the 6-foot-3, 210-pound blueliner registered four goals and 17 assists for 21 points in 40 regular season contests for the Steelheads. He missed the latter part of the regular season and the playoffs for the eventual Kelly Cup Champions, suffering a knee injury that sidelined him until mid-December.
Gabinet spent his first professional season with SaiPa Lappeenranta in Finland, posting 3 points (2g, 1a) in 46 games. He split the 2005-06 season between Idaho and the AHL's Iowa Stars, totaling 16 points (2g, 14a) and 53 penalty minutes in 40 contests.
Prior to turning pro, the Edmonton, Alberta native spent four years at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, amassing 47 points (6g, 41a) in 130 games. Originally, he was an 8th round selection (237th overall) of the Los Angeles Kings in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.
The Stingrays look to make it two in a row against Charlotte on Thursday night as they visit the Checkers at the Charlotte Bobcat Arena. Game time is at 7 p.m. with the Benito's Pre-game show with Josh Heller beginning at 6:45 p.m. on CNN 1450am.
Catch the Stingrays back in action at the North Charleston Coliseum on Saturday, Feb. 9th as they host the Texas Wildcatters. It's Faith and Fun Night on Saturday with a special 5 p.m. start time and a FREE post-game concert with Sonic Flood.
The Stingrays are at home again on Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. for Youth Jersey Day. The first 1,000 kids to enter the Coliseum will receive their free Youth Jersey courtesy of Pivotal Fitness, Palmetto Exterminators, Hardee's and Duncan's Boats. It's also the first Dog Day of Winter; bring your dog out to enjoy the hockey game.
