TONIGH'S MATCHUP: The Cyclones will play four of the next five games in Downtown Cincinnati, beginning tonight against the Kalamazoo Wings. Jarrod Skalde's team is just five points out of second place with six games in hand and could close the gap even further with seven out of the next nine against the Wings and the Chicago Express. So far in 2011-12 against the Wings, Cincinnati has posted a 3-4 record despite outscoring them 29-28 - with all three triumphs coming at U.S. Bank Arena.
TONIGHT'S PROMOTION: Winter Hat Night - The first 2,000 fans receive a FREE limited edition Cyclones Winter Hat!
SCOUTING THE WINGS: Nick Bootland's club had its three-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday night against South Carolina and have now gone 4-5-0-1 in their last ten games. In fact, four of the Wings' last five games were decided by two goals or less. With Brandon Svendsen once again in the American Hockey League, Trent Daavettila has assumed the role of offensive leader. He ranks 10th in the ECHL with 32 points and is tied for third in the league with 25 assists. Taylor Ellington has been the biggest Cyclones-killer this season, notching nine points (1 goal, 8 assists) in the seven match ups thus far. Netminder Riley Gill has accumulated a 13-8-1-2 mark this year with a 3.01 goals against average.
About Sunday Afternoon in Elmira: For the second straight day, Louis Caporusso potted the game-winning goal, this time in a shootout, as the Jackals defeated the Cyclones by a 4-3 final score in front of 3,234 at First Arena. The Cyclones erased a two-goal third period deficit to force overtime and earn a point.
Home is Where the Wins Are: In 2011-12, the Cyclones have posted one of the top home records in the ECHL with an 11-1-0-2 mark. Their 11 triumphs at U.S. Bank Arena rank fourth-most while their one regulation defeat is a league-low. The Clones are just five regulation wins away from eclipsing last year's home total (15). They currently ride the ECHL's third-longest active home winning streak (5 games).
The Captain Returns: After a four-game stint with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, Cyclones Captain Mathieu Aubin makes his return to Cincinnati. With his latest trip to the AHL, Aubin had a goal and an assist. With the Clones in 2011-12, he remains atop the team in scoring (27 points) and has etched his name on the scoresheet in 10 of his last 12 games.
The New Guy: On Thursday, the Cyclones acquired rookie center man Matt Sisca from the Bakersfield Condors in exchange for Evan Trupp and Ryan Annesley. Sisca, a 21-year-old, was second on the Condors with 27 points and ranks fifth among all ECHL first-year players.
