Colorado Eagles News Release
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Bakersfield Condors doubled-up the Colorado Eagles, 4-2, in the first game of a weekend set between the teams. The Condors, who entered the game with the worst record in the league, got two goals from their power play, which also entered the game as the worst in the league, as they were able to take advantage of odd rebounds all night long.
Colorado jumped out to an early lead when Patrick Cey capitalized on an odd-man rush by putting home a Jake Marto rebound from the doorstep on the Eagles' first shot of the game. But even though Colorado dominated play in the first period, out-shooting Bakersfield 13-5, the Condors were able to tie the game on their first shot as well -- even though it didn't come until 14:13 had ticked off the clock.
After forcing a turnover in the Eagles' defensive zone, Bakersfield was able to counter when Erik Burgdoerfer took a shot from the left point and Casey Pierro-Zabotel, stationed on the doorstep, deflected it past Andrew Penner.
Bakersfield owned the second period, out-scoring the Eagles 3-1 with the help of two power-play goals by Alain Goulet. The first came at 3:26, with just two seconds remaining on a four minute man-advantage, when Aaron Lewadniuk took a shot from the left circle and Penner kicked it into the right slot where Goulet was waiting.
The Condors made it 3-1 just over six minutes later when Robby Dee put home his own rebound. He followed his initial shot from the slot and picked up the rebound below the left circle before letting off a bad-angle shot that made its way under the Eagles' netminder and into the net.
At 17:09 of the second period, Goulet picked up his second power-play goal of the frame with the help of another odd goal off a rebound. He put the puck on net from just above the left circle as the Condors entered the zone, then he beat the defense to the rebound with a one-handed swipe that sent the puck top-shelf.
The Eagles got an important goal with just 33 seconds left in the period, stymieing Bakersfield's momentum, when Chad Costello set up Adam Chorneyko with a spinning, backhand pass from the slot into the left circle where the latter was able to beat Bryan Pitton as Michael Forney crashed the crease.
However, Colorado couldn't carry that momentum into the final frame in which neither team scored.
