Lakeshore Chinooks News Release

Mequon, Wis. -- Monumental hitting paired with electric pitching lifted the Chinooks (12-11) over the Madison Mallards 26-7 in game one but a late game meltdown in game two left Lakeshore on the wrong side of things in a 6-5 loss.

Game 1:

Madison dropped four runs on the Chinooks in the top of the first and that was the last time they ever saw the score in their favor. Lakeshore retaliated with six runs of their own in the latter half of the inning and they followed up with 20 more runs over the next eight.

Jackson Gray, the Western Kentucky Hilltopper was easily the player of the game, despite a grand slam day from Griffin Doersching. Gray went 3-for-4 with two home runs and a double, totaling six RBIs. Quite literally, Doersching, launched a moonshot to left field that barely landed fair, giving him the all-time home run record for the Lakeshore Chinooks (15).

Seven Chinooks recorded a multi-RBI game, as Lakeshore fell short by just one run for the most runs scored ever in a Northwoods League game. The Mankato Moondogs hold the honor.

In Wisconsin Rapids Tuesday, Iowa infielder Brendan Sher stepped up and led the 'Nooks with two hits in the loss. On Wednesday, Sher amassed four RBIs on three hits, including a three-run triple to center field.

From the mound, Ryan Jungbauer salvaged two-thirds innings before being pulled by field manager Travis Akre. Mitch Mueller was called in for relief, garnering the win, and held the Mallards scoreless in three and one-thirds innings pitched on two hits, two walks and six strikeouts.

Game 2:

Batting was at the forefront of people's attention in game one, but pitching quickly became known as Lakeshore pitched seven shutout innings to begin game two against Madison. Ben Riffe began the evening game on the hill and propelled the Chinooks in the right direction from the get go. The Lansing Community College freshman threw six innings on one hit and two strikeouts.

Center fielder Collin Mathews, who has struggled to find his stride from the plate thus far, hitting just .152 entering Wednesday, provided Lakeshore with their first two runs on a homerun. Later, Doersching found himself in a familiar place with a three-run shot of his own to extend his team's lead 5-0. It was the Norseman's second long ball of the day and his seventh of the summer, which leads the Northwoods League.

In the eighth inning, the Mallards manufactured a comeback and eventual lead thanks in part to four runs given up in the eighth and two in the ninth under pitcher's Tyler Schweitzer and Jacob Henderson.

Up Next:

The Chinooks are right back at it Thursday for the beginning of a two-game homestand against the Fond Du Lac Dock Spiders, with the first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
