Chihuahuas and Whataburger Team up to Host Food Drive at Southwest University Park

May 15, 2018 - Pacific Coast League (PCL) - El Paso Chihuahuas News Release

EL PASO - The El Paso Chihuahuas and Whataburger are teaming up to host the fourth annual food drive at Southwest University Park. The drive will take place Thursday, May 17th through Sunday, May 20th when the Chihuahuas host the Fresno Grizzlies (Houston Astros affiliate) and will benefit the El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank.

Whataburger will give Chihuahuas fans who donate three (3) or more canned goods, non-perishable food items, or a minimum monetary contribution of $1, one (1) coupon good for a free Whataburger, while supplies last. Every $1 donation produces up to 10 meals.

"Whataburger has been an incredible community partner through this initiative and we hope this year is the biggest yet," said Chihuahuas Vice President and General Manager Brad Taylor.

"Whataburger is proud to partner with the El Paso Chihuahuas again on such an important cause," said Whataburger Director of Operations Henry Apodaca. "We can think of no better way to say thank you to our supportive community than to invest in our neighbors. Last year alone, the El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank provided more than 24,000 meals through this effort, and we hope our city will work together with us to continue fighting hunger in big ways."

Fans are encouraged to donate non-perishable food items as they enter through the gates of Southwest University Park. Fans are asked to donate canned vegetables and fruits, soups, high protein items such as tuna and peanut butter, boxed pastas and cereals, and staples such as packaged rice and beans. Fans may also make monetary donations.

In addition to the food drive, the Chihuahuas Volunteer Pack presented by Helen of Troy will be volunteering at the El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank headquarters on Saturday, May 19th from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. The Pack, alongside Whataburger representatives, will be assisting with sorting food, cleaning, office work, and other duties as needed at the warehouse. Anyone interested in joining the Helen of Troy Volunteer Pack can register here: bit.ly/All-Paws-In.

"We are very grateful to the Chihuahuas, Whataburger, and the fans attending the games May 17-May 20. Every dollar donated, and every can of food brought in helps us to further our mission of feeding the 91,000 individuals in our community who are food insecure," said Susan Goodell, El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank's Chief Executive Officer.

Great seats are still available for the homestand and are on sale now at epchihuahuas.com or by calling (915) 533-BASE. Guests are encouraged to purchase early and from the Chihuahuas Box Office for the best rates!
