Charlotte Checkers News Release

(Augusta, Georgia - Friday, January 6, 2005) The Augusta Lynx scored three goals in the first period and four in the third period for a 7-3 triumph over the Checkers Friday night in Georgia. Dan Sullivan and Joe Pereira each scored a pair of goals for the Lynx in the victory.

Luke Stauffacher, Mike Bayrack and Jake Ortmeyer scored the Charlotte goals, with goalie Chris Holt taking the loss with 32 saves while facing 39 shots. The loss snapped a Checkers four-game winning streak, and saw their record on their current nine-game in 13-day schedule fall to 4-3-1. In five games against Augusta this season, Charlotte is 3-2-0.

"We had a chance to win this game but missed too many open net goals tonight," remarked Charlotte coach Derek Wilkinson. "Our patched up lineup finally caught up with us tonight. The effort was there but they got the bounces and we didn't."

The Lynx jumped on the Checkers with three goals in the first 5:42 of the first period. Lang and Sullivan cleaned up easy rebounds in front of Holt, while Passmore deflected one in on Holt's short side from the goal line to give Augusta a three-goal advantage. Charlotte bounced back late on a steal and goal by Stauffacher to cut the Lynx lead to 3-1 after one period.

In the second period the Checkers got to within one goal on Bayrack's power-play goal at 11:19 off an assist from Dusty Jamieson. Charlotte nearly tied the game twice, but wide open net goals were missed by Steve MacIntyre and Kris MacPhee.

Early in the third period Bryan Rodney also missed an open net that would have tied the game. Augusta scored next on a power-play goal by Pereira at 8:41 to give Augusta a two-goal cushion at 4-2. Two more goals in less than a minute by Sullivan and Joel Perrault pushed the Lynx lead to 6-2. Ortmeyer's goal at 14:47 made it a 6-3 score before Sullivan's second goal of the game made it a 7-3 final. Charlotte could only muster three shots on goal in the final period.

The loss dropped the Checkers record to 18-13-3 for 39 points while Augusta raised its record to 14-17-3 for 31 points. Charlotte will close out its nine-game in 13-day stretch Saturday when they travel to Greenville for a 7:00 p.m. meeting with the Grrrowl. The Checkers return home to Charlotte Bobcats Arena on Wednesday, January 11 to host the Pensacola Ice Pilots at 7:00 p.m.
