San Diego, California - Two goals in a 2:31 span late in regulation, propelled the San Diego Gulls to a 2-1 victory over the Steelheads on Friday night.

With the Steelheads (19-10-2) clinging to a 1-0 lead late in the third period, the home team tied the game at one on a point shot by defenseman Nikita Korovkin. Korovkin's fourth of the year was assisted by Patrick Levesque. Minutes later, Pierre-Luc Sleigher converted on a nifty give-and-go with Alex Kim to give the Gulls (14-12-4) their first lead. Sleigher chipped the puck past goaltender Steve Silverthorn (33 saves) from the slot for his eighth goal of the year. Forward Steve Hildenbrand also drew an assist.

The Steelheads lone goal came in the first period, off the stick of Steelheads' leading scorer Garett Bembridge. Bembridge recorded his league leading, 26th goal of the year at 4:39 of the opening stanza. The Melfort, Saskatchewan native stole the puck in the Gulls' zone and deked to his backhand, while skating across the top of the crease. He then lifted the puck over a sprawled out Tyler Weiman (31 saves) to give the Steelheads a 1-0 lead. It was the club's third shorthanded goal of the season and the fifth time in four meetings of this season series that either the Steelheads or Gulls have found the twine on a man disadvantage.

There was no scoring in the second period, as both teams recorded 11 shots in the frame. Through two periods the Gulls held a 23-22 shot advantage.

The Gulls finished with a 35-32 shot advantage, while both teams were held scoreless in the power play in the contest. The Steelheads are now 10-4-1 on the road this season and 1-3-0 against the Gulls.

The Steelheads hit the ice again on Saturday, January 7, when they take on the Ice Dogs in Long Beach. Faceoff is at 8:00 p.m. MST.
