(Greenville, South Carolina) - The Greenville Grrrowl scored a pair of goals in a twenty two span in the second period, the second proving to be the game winner, in a 4-3 victory over the Charlotte Checkers Saturday night at the Bi-Lo Center. Allan Sirois and Duncan Dalmao scored the two second period goals for Greenville, just after Mike Bayrack had given the Checkers a 3-2 advantage midway through the period.

Dusty Jamieson and Bryan Rodney scored first period goals for Charlotte, while the Grrrowl got power-play goals in the first from Les Haggett and Cody Blanshan. Charlotte goalie Jeff Glass took the loss in net with 36 saves, while Greenville netminder Mike Morrison made 28 saves in getting the victory.

"It was disappointing that we couldn't get at least a point out of tonight, but it was the end of a long stretch of games," commented Charlotte coach Derek Wilkinson. "We still have a few guys who aren't on the same page and are more concerned with points than playing in their own end. However, this tough stretch of games has really brought us together as a team and will pay some good dividends later in the season."

The Checkers jumped out to a 2-0 lead seven minutes into the first period. Just thirty nine seconds into the game, Jamieson took advantage of a miscue by Morrison around the Grrrowl goal and wristed in his team-leading 14th goal of the season for a 1-0 lead. At 7:43 Rodney's shot from the right point on a power play eluded Morrison for a 2-0 Checkers advantage.

The usually strong Charlotte penalty killing unit faltered in the first period and allowed the Grrrowl to get back in the game. With Jake Ortmeyer just about set to get out of the penalty box, Haggett walked into the slot untouched and wristed in a shot by Glass to cut the Checkers lead to 2-1. Blanshan deflected in a shot on another Greenville power play at 18:12 to tie the game at 2-2 after the first period.

In the second period Charlotte grabbed its second lead of the game at 10:05. Brandon Cullen passed the puck in the slot to Bayrack who notched his 13th goal of the campaign for a 3-2 advantage. The Grrrowl struck back quickly with two goals by Sirois and Dalmao in a 22 second span, and Greenville took its first lead of the game at 4-3. The Grrrowl outshot the Checkers 18-6 in the second period.

Charlotte gave it a good effort in the third period with 11 shots, but was unable to secure the tying goal in succumbing to the 4-3 final. The loss was the Checkers second in a row, and dropped their record to 18-14-3 for 39 points. Greenville improved to 17-10-1 for 35 points.

The Checkers return home to Charlotte Bobcats Arena on Wednesday, January 11 to host the Pensacola Ice Pilots at 7:00 p.m.
