Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings looked for a second win in as many night's over the Pacific Division leading Fresno squad, but couldn't shake the grip of the Falcons and fell short, 4-3.

The first period began as a defensive battle with both teams having a couple of chances. Falcons Forward Fraser Clair was awarded a penalty shot early, but Salmon Kings Goaltender Rob McVicar shut the door. Victoria Captain Ryan Wade opened the scoring on the powerplay. Wade picked up a Falcons turnover, and popped a backhander in the net with 6:25 left in the first period.

With just a little under two minutes remaining in the first, Fresno's Luke Curtin scored on one of his six shots in the period, with a shorthanded wrist shot to tie the game 1-1. Netminder Rob McVicar led Victoria into the first intermission saving 14 of 15 shots.

In the second period, Victoria capitalized on their fourth man advantage of the night as Forward Lanny Gare finished off a cross slot pass from Kurt Drummond. At 7:18 of the period, the Falcons tied it again as Shawn Mather snuck in a shot from the side of the net, while on the powerplay.

One and a half minutes into the third period, Falcons Winger Jean-Francois Plourde gave Fresno their first lead of the series slipping it past McVicar on the blocker side.

Fresno added to the lead at 9:40 of the third when Mather's shot rebounded to a waiting John Wroblewski, who beat McVicar to give the Falcons the 4-2 advantage.

Victoria clawed within one goal as Jade Galbraith perched himself in front of the Fresno crease and tipped in a point shot from Defenseman Kurt Drummond, with just 6:51 remaining in the final period.

In the final five minutes of the match, Victoria made the crowd of 4360 at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre roar with multiple opportunities in front of the Fresno net, however Goaltender Jamie Holden held Victoria off the board.

The Salmon Kings finished two for five on the powerplay while the Falcons converted on one of their four opportunities with the man advantage. McVicar faced 43 shots while Victoria had 25 shots on Holden.
