Checkers beat Bombers again, win 5-2

Dayton, O.H. - Checkers forward Bruce Graham supplied the winning goal in a 5-2 victory as Charlotte defeated the Dayton Bombers for the second time in four nights.
The scoring began in the second period when a point shot by Matt Waddell was deflected past Bombers netminder, Rejean Beauchemin at 1:35 giving Charlotte a one goal advantage. Another fortuitous bounce for Charlotte helped bring about their second tally. Dayton attempted to clear the puck from the defensive zone when the referee got his skate in the way. This lead to a shot on goal by Bruce Graham that was stopped by Beauchemin but, the rebound was slammed home by Mark Lee at 9:14. This gave Charlotte a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes.
In the final stanza, the period began with four-on-four action. After Checkers goalie, Mike Ayers stopped a breakaway attempt by Matt Beaudoin, Dayton would find the back of the net. A shot by defenseman, Tyler Christie was stopped but the rebound was shot in by Mike Walsh at 1:29. Later, Charlotte would recapture their two goal advantage when Bruce Graham made a nice move in front of Beauchemin and flipped a backhand shot over the pad of the sprawling goaltender. Graham's goal at 7:58 gave the Checkers a 3-1 advantage. In one last attempt to mount a comeback, Dayton would get a goal on a nice feed by Yannick Tifu to Masahito Nishiwaki who would slam it into the net at 10:45. Charlotte would solidify their victory when Mike Bayrack scored on a breakaway at 11:33 to give Charlotte a 4-2 lead. Mark Lee added an empty net goal at 18:34 bringing the game to its 5-2 conclusion.
Notes: Ayers turned aside 21 shots on 23 attempts while Beauchemin stops 24 of 29...Neither team scored on their three power play chances.
The Checkers are in their 15th season of play as a member of the ECHL. Their next home game takes place on Feb. 7 against the South Carolina Stingrays. In the team's 14-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 10 times including three consecutive playoff appearances to date.
