Chiefs flushed by Royals

Johnstown Chiefs News Release

Reading, PA - The Johnstown Chiefs' comeback effort fell short Friday night in Reading as they fell by a score of 4-3.

Carelessness in their own end with the puck cost Johnstown in the first period as Chris Blight and Patrick Jarrett scored unassisted goals off of Chiefs turnovers. Blight's tally came just 45 seconds in, while Jarret made it 2-0 at 5:01.

Rob LaLonde's power play goal at 12:46 began a furious string of scoring. Mike Sgroi would put a wrister through Jonathan Quick's five-hole only 16 seconds later to cut the Royals' lead to 3-1. However, Ned Lukacevic beat Ryan Nie 12 seconds after Sgroi's tally to reestablish Reading's three-goal advantage.

Other than Sgroi's goal, Quick confounded Chiefs' shooters, especially Codey Burki who could not score on two shorthanded breakaways in the first.

The Chiefs' defense shored up in the second period and did not allow the Royals to extend their lead. Randy Rowe was able to cash in at 13:55 of the second finishing a cross-ice pass from Jason Spence. Rowe was tripped up skating down the slot, and had to tip Spence's pass in from his stomach.

Ryan Garlock slipped a shot along the ice past Quick with the Chiefs on the power play at 14:11 of the third setting the stage for a furious effort to put up the tying goal with Nie pulled. Johnstown had the puck at the front of the Royals' net for nearly the entire 1:09 that Nie was off the ice, but couldn't jam it by Quick. Nie recovered after the first to turn aside all 20 of the Royals' shots he saw in the final 40 minutes, but going 2-for-6 in the first put the Chiefs too far behind. The Chiefs' power play was 1-for-6 on the night with Garlock's man-advantage goal.
