Elmira Jackals News Release
Bill Leclerc scored his first goal of the season 1:03 into overtime to give the Trenton Devils a 4-3 overtime win over the Elmira Jackals Friday night at Sovereign Bank Arena.
Leclerc's tally came after Tony Zancanaro tied the game up with 2:18 left in regulation, sliding a Jason Paige rebound home for his 8th of the season.
A scoreless first period, one that saw the Devils outshoot the Jackals 19-9, featured a number of skirmishes initiated by several Trenton brushes with goaltender Joel Martin (34 saves) and accordingly defended by his Jackals teammates.
After combining for 94 minutes in penalties last Friday in Elmira's 5-2 loss here, the clubs tacked on 68 more in the opening period and the power play chances reading four-to-one in favor of the homestanding Devils.
After penalties took center stage in the opening twenty minutes, the scoring came around in the middle frame and three of the four combined strikes coming on the power play.
Elmira got things going on the man-up when Pierre-Luc Faubert wired home his team-leading 19th goal of the year between the pads of David Caruso (28 saves) at 2:19 for a 1-0 lead.
The lead was shortlived as just forty-four seconds Trevor Kell maneuvered to the slot and wristed in his 9th of the season to tie the game up.
The Devils took the lead working their fifth power play of the night when defenseman Stephen Wood triple-clutched his stick and finally released a shot that Martin appeared to be screened on and never saw. The goal was Wood's 12th overall and team-high 8th on the power play and it came at 14:04 to put Trenton up 2-1.
Pierre-Luc Leblond then took his third penalty of the night, a goaltender interference call, that set the stage for the Jackals to tie the game just before the second intermission.
Benoit Doucet fired a shot from the right circle that Caruso blocked and then did likewise on Kyle Wharton's follow-up. But Chaz Johnson proved that the third time was a charm, banging home his 15th of the year into a wide open net at 18:09.
The Jackals took their final lead of the night with their third power play goal of the game, a bullet from the high slot by Doucet at 7:00 of the final period for a 3-2 advantage.
The Jackals are back on home ice Saturday night when they host the Reading Royals in a 7:35 p.m. face-off at First Arena. They conclude a four-game in five-night stretch with a 1 p.m. Sunday visit to Johnstown.
