Brampton Beast News Release
RAPID CITY - The Brampton Beast stuck with their game plan early on and jumped on the back of goaltender Trevor Cann to pull out a 2-0 win over the Rapid City Rush Friday night. Cann made 41 saves for his first shutout of the season and was nothing short of spectacular for the Beast, making several highlight-reel saves late in the game to give the Beast their second road victory of the season.
With the win, the Beast improve to 5-7-1 on the season, and have now won consecutive games in South Dakota. The opening period was fairly back and forth, with both clubs exchanging chances throughout. Despite the Beast holding a slight edge in shots on goal through 20 minutes of play, the game would remain even. Each team had one power-play opportunity in the first period.
The Beast took their foot off the gas pedal in the second frame, allowing 21 shots against and only tallying five of their own. But with stellar play from Trevor Cann and the continued success of the Beast's road penalty kill, currently ranked first in the ECHL, the visiting squad was able to dodge a bullet to keep the game scoreless through two periods.
Entering the third, Brampton held true to their style and continued to play well in close games, coming on when they needed to most. Just 7:44 into the final period, Brampton-native Jason Pitton hammered home what would go on to be the game winner at the far side of the post after Rob Ricci had made a spectacular set up pass from behind the net. Stephon Thorne, who was scratched in Wednesday's game, drew into the line-up tonight, a decision which immediatelty paid dividends as he put home a rebound moments after Pitton's marker to give the Beast some insurance.
With Mathew Maione called for slashing and just 2:22 remaining. The Beast would need to rally once again behind their league-leading road penalty kill as The Rush pulled their goalie for the extra attacker. The staunch defense would prove to be enough as the Beast killed off the power play and skated to the eventual 2-0 victory, the teams' first shutout of the season. Game three of the Rapid City series will commence tomorrow with drop is slated for 9:05 EST. Catch all the action live on www.4cornersradio.ca.
