A New Day, a New Chapter
The Wheeling Nailers will turn the page on Saturday night, looking to bounce back from a difficult 5-1 loss to the Florida Everblades on Friday. After falling behind 2-0 during the opening period, Wheeling battled back to within a goal in the middle frame, as Zach Yuen lit the lamp for the third time this season. Unfortunately, that was the lone bright spot in the game for the Nailers, who surrendered three goals in the third period, falling on home ice for just the second time in seven tilts. Wheeling has bounced back from a loss with a victory on five of six occasions thus far this season.
One Shy of a Dozen
The Florida Everblades have put together a nearly perfect stretch of 12 consecutive games, compiling 11 wins and 22 points, including six straight victories, thanks to Friday's 5-1 decision at WesBanco Arena. Five different players found the back of the net for Florida, starting with Alex Aleardi, who joined the team from the AHL Charlotte Checkers the previous day. Mike Aviani added to the Everblades' advantage in the first period, before John McInnis, Artem Sergeev, and Jeff Costello added insurance markers in the third, completing the scoring. Daniel Altshuller started in goal for the first time in four games, earning the win with 20 saves.
Spreading the Power Play Wealth
When Zach Yuen scored Wheeling's lone goal on Friday night, he became the first player on the 2014-15 squad to record multiple power play goals. Wheeling's tenth ranked power play (18.9%) had dented the twine on nine occasions prior to Friday, with nine different players (Bakker, Brace, Gill, Gilbert, MacKay, Rowney, Shea, Torquato, Yuen) being responsible for the goals. Yuen is currently tied second on the club with four power play points, along with Sahir Gill, while Riley Brace leads both special teams, having contributed five power play points and three shorthanded points. Florida's power play goal on Friday was its 14th of the campaign.
Torquato Closing in on the Top Ten
Zack Torquato is currently playing in his fourth season with the Nailers, making him the lone remaining player on the squad from the start of the 2011-12 campaign. With that, the forward is climbing his way up the team record books, and currently sits just one point away from the top ten in career points. Zack enters Saturday's game having suited up in 159 games with Wheeling, racking up 40 goals, 89 assists, and 129 points. Aaron Clarke currently holds tenth place with 130 points, while there is a 23-point jump to Keli Corpse in ninth at 153. When Torquato eclipses the 100-assist plateau, he will become the ninth Nailer/Thunderbird to do so.
Florida Doesn't Mind the Cold
Saturday night marks the second and final head-to-head meeting of the regular season between the Nailers and Everblades, who only collide in Wheeling for the third consecutive campaign. Florida has won each of its five games at WesBanco Arena during that time, improving its road record in the historical series to 7-1-0. The Everblades have skated away with two points in 12 of the 17 clashes all-time, with the Nailers' last triumph coming on March 9th, 2012 in Johnstown. Wheeling will look to even the season series on Saturday, preventing a fourth straight set from going the other direction.
On Saturday, the first 2,000 fans will receive a jersey bank, courtesy of Main Street Bank. McDonald's Friends & Family tickets will also be available for Saturday for $39.99, including four tickets, four hats, and four McDonald's Value Meal coupons. The start time is 7:35 for Wheeling and Florida.
Holiday packs are also available. For $49, fans can purchase the Elf Package, receiving four ticket vouchers, a t-shirt, and an autographed puck. For $99, fans can purchase the Reindeer Package, receiving ten ticket vouchers. For $129, fans can purchase the Santa Package, receiving four ticket vouchers, a replica jersey, and a Reebok hat.
