Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE - Defenseman Colten Hayes scored a goal, added an assist, and goaltender Niklas Lundstrom made 29 saves to lift the Alaska Aces to a 3-2 victory over the Idaho Steelheads, before 4,843 boisterous fans at Sullivan Arena on Friday night.
The Aces shook off a 12-day layoff to earn their fourth straight win (4-1-0 in five games) and second in three meetings this season with Idaho, who entered one point off the top record in the league. Bryan Cameron earned the game winning goal and added an assist, returning from injury in his first game since Oct. 25.
Hayes hammered a one-timer past former Aces goaltender Olivier Roy for a 1-0 lead, finishing Cameron's sharp cross-ice feed at the left circle at 3:40 of the first period. Alex Belzile, in his first game back at Sullivan Arena since helping lead the Aces to last year's Kelly Cup title, tied the game at 1-1 on a power play goal with 7:35 elapsed on a rebound at the left post.
On the next shift, Brett Robinson wrestled Hayes in the right corner of the Aces zone and his holding penalty led to Olivier Archambault's 10th goal at 9:03 on the power play. Tim Coffman fed Greg Wolfe on the rush, who attacked the net and produced a rebound to Archambault, wide open at the left post for a 2-1 lead.
The Aces weathered several Idaho attempts in a seven-minute stretch in the second period to preserve the lead, and Cameron's rebound goal with 1:04 left extended the lead to 3-1 after Roy stopped Hayes from the right circle. Cameron jammed the puck past Roy at the right post, initially overturned by the officials but corrected after a review at the penalty benches.
Charlie Dodero's second goal of the season cut the Aces lead to 3-2 at 3:23 of the third period on a second-chance puck at the right circle. But Lundstrom responded with a remarkable save several minute later, when he stretched the right pad out to stop Dodero's re-direction at the left circle.
Roy, falling to 2-7-0 lifetime against the Aces, made 17 saves in his return to Sullivan Arena.
NOTES: The Aces scratched Jason Gregoire, Justin Breton, Andy Bathgate, Tyler Currier and Dustin Molle ... Tim Coffman was stopped by Roy on a penalty shot with 2:41 left in the first period ... the Aces improved to 14-4-1 in the last 19 games against Idaho ... both teams went 1-of-4 on the power play ... Ryan Walters made his Aces debut and skated on a line with Ryan Tesink and Jacob Doty.
The two teams meet in a rematch tomorrow at 7:15 p.m. (GCI/KFQD) and tickets are available at the Aces offices, www.alaskaaces.com/tickets, Ticketmaster.com and local Fred Meyer locations.
