Gladiators Boxed Out, 3-2

Atlanta Gladiators News Release

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC - The Gladiators (6-9-1-0) scored late in the first period, and late in the third period, but couldn't get enough in between to topple the South Carolina Stingrays (6-9-0-4) Saturday afternoon at North Charleston Coliseum. Brenden Walker and Dyson Stevenson tallied goals in the effort, while Adam Brown was kept busy, making 36 saves.

The first began mostly in the Gladiators end as the Stingrays attempted a more aggressive start than the last two games against Gwinnett. Their aggression culminated in a goal that Braden Pimm tipped off of Guy Lebeouf's point shot at 9:11. The Gladiators would counter immediately thereafter with strong play in their offensive zone.

Gwinnett picked up their first 5-on-3 of the season at 15:15, and just a few seconds after the two-man advantage ended, Brenden Walker took a slapshot to beat Jeff Jakaitis to his right, tying the score at one.

Entering the second, play shifted back to the Stingrays favor, starting with, of all things, a Gladiators power play. With Wade Epp in the box for slashing, the Gladiators failed to get their offense set up. Just 30 seconds into the advantage, Rob Bellamy started a two-on-one break the opposite way, finished off by Patrick Gaul. Gwinnett's second shorthanded goal allowed this year gave South Carolina the 2-1 lead.

The "˜Rays doubled up the lead with a power play goal by Brandon Hynes at 11:05 of the second. The home team fed off the momentum, powering their way to 18 shots in the period.

In the third, they did an even better job of holding the Gladiators down to just a handful of shots. With about three minutes left, Dyson Stevenson made it a one-goal game on a one-time feed from Anthony Perdicaro. The rookie forward beat Jakaitis' left elbow, ringing the left post, top post, and far post, knocking the bottle off in the process.

It was too little, too late, though as the Gladiators could not ring the "˜Rays for one more, despite more pressure with the pulled goaltender. Adam Brown stopped 36 of the 39 shots he faced, while Jakaitis was 20-of-22.

The Gladiators will take on the Stingrays in North Charleston once again on Sunday at 3:05pm. The Gladiators will return to The Arena at Gwinnett Center on Saturday, December 13th to ring in the holidays with Sing for Santa weekend, starting against the Cincinnati Cyclones at 7:05pm.
