Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV- This weekend, Riley Brace and his cousin Adam battled it out on the ice for the first time in their professional careers. On Saturday night, Riley helped his Wheeling Nailers earn the two points, scoring the first two goals in a 3-2 victory over the Florida Everblades. Eric Hartzell preserved the win for Wheeling, making 40 saves, including 33 over the course of the last two periods.
After a scoreless opening frame, the Nailers needed just 30 seconds to get things started in the second. Morgan Ellis skated the puck into the left circle, spinning a pass to the front of the net. Chaz Johnson quickly touched the puck over to the right side of the slot, where it was hammered into the cage by Riley Brace. A similar play developed 1:43 later, when Johnson and David Gilbert helped to set up Brace for his second straight slap shot goal from the right side of the crease. Later in the period, Wheeling tacked on one more marker, after forcing a turnover in neutral ice. Gilbert sprung Sahir Gill on a partial breakaway, and Gill converted, roofing a shot over Allen York's blocker.
Florida attempted to battle back in the third period, directing 19 shots on goal. After 36 straight saves by Eric Hartzell, the Everblades eventually broke through with 5:08 remaining. Adam Brace redirected Matt Mangene's shot from the top of the right circle for a power play tally. 1:33 later, Brant Harris made it a one-goal margin, when he swung a wrist shot in from the top of the left circle. Wheeling shut the door from that moment on, closing out the 3-2 victory on home ice.
Eric Hartzell made a career-high 40 saves, earning the win for Wheeling. Allen York took the loss for Florida, stopping 22 of the 25 shots he faced.
