Driedger Shuts out Elmira 1-0 as Harvey Nets Game Winner

ELMIRA, N.Y.- Chris Driedger made 38 saves and Kevin Harvey potted the game's only goal as the Evansville IceMen, presented by Coors Light defeated the Elmira Jackals by a score of 1-0 in a goaltending battle. Driedger's second shutout of the season helped the IceMen (8-7-1-1, 18 points) secure five points on their three game Thanksgiving week road trip.
Evansville found the back of the net in the first period. Matt Lowry won a face-off cleanly back to Troy Rutkowski, who fired a hard shot. Sam Marrota made the save, but the rebound found the stick of Kevin Harvey who blasted in the rebound to put Evansville up 1-0.The goal was Harvey's fifth of the season and proved to be the game winner.
Driedger made nine saves in the first period to keep the Jackals off the board. The IceMen killed off three power plays in the first 20 minutes.
The second period turned into a brawl. Myles Bell dropped the gloves in his first professional fight. Tensions escalated after Guy Lepine put a devastating, yet clean open ice hit on Rob Florentino. Steven Shamanski started a fight with Lepine because of the hit and got taken to the ice for his troubles.
The fight continued as Matt Lowry began battling Nick Tuzzalino. Both players were ejected for a secondary altercation.
In third period, the IceMen penalty kill shined. They denied the Jackals on three power plays. The IceMen stopped six Jackal man advantages overall and have kept opponents off the board in 19 out of their last 20 penalty kills.
With less than four minutes to play, Justin Daniels broke away for Elmira. Lepine rushed back into the play and made a diving stop that tripped Daniels and forced a penalty shot, the first against the IceMen this season.
Daniels skated wide then drove right in front of Driedger's net. The IceMen netminder never flinched and turned away Daniels wrister to keep the Jackals off the scoreboard.
The Jackals had a few more shots, but never got past Driedger who claimed his second shutout of the season. In the last week, Driedger has won three games for Evansville and one for the Binghamton Senators of the AHL.
Marrota made 19 saves in the losing effort for Elmira. With their win, the IceMen hold onto fourth place in the North Division.
The IceMen will journey to Indy on Wednesday, before they finally return to home ice on Friday, Dec. 5 to take on the Kalamazoo Wings. It will be Mascot Night at the Ford Center so drop by and watch area mascots take the ice in a game of broom ball.
