
Bums Split Doubleheader with RiverHawks

LOVES PARK, IL-The Traverse City Beach Bums experienced a day of highs and lows after dropping the first game of their doubleheader to the Rockford RiverHawks by a score of 10-6 and won the second in front of 2,498 fans at Road Ranger Stadium by a score of 9-6.
The Beach Bums hit seven home runs during the two games. In game one, the Beach Bums overcame a five-run deficit after game one starter Bryan Banes gave up five runs in a third of an inning. Traverse City third baseman Stephen Shults launched home runs in his first two at-bats and designated hitter Chase Burch drilled a two-run homer to tie the game at five in the fourth.
The RiverHawks went on to score five unanswered runs in the contest, highlighted by a two-run home run from Rockford left fielder Greg Van Horn. In the seventh, Beach Bums catcher Chris Kay blasted his first professional home run to left-center field to complete the scoring in game one.
In game two, the Beach Bums rode the hot-hitting of right fielder Matt Brown to a victory. Brown highlighted a three-run first inning with a two-run single and drove in two more runs with singles in the third and sixth.
In the fifth, the right fielder came to the plate as the third batter of the fifth inning, and playing for the United Way as part of the 5/3rd Home Run Payoff Inning, sponsored by 5/3rd Bank. Brown connected with a solo home run to right field, and helped 5/3rd Bank donate $530.00 to the United Way with his second home run of the season. The home runs mark the third time a Beach Bums player has hit a home run as part of the 5/3rd Home Run Payoff Inning this season. Burch and second baseman Tom Zebroski have also homered as part of the contest.
The Beach Bums also received a home run from left fielder J.T. Hall, extending his single-season record to 21 home runs this season. Shortstop Jose Vargas also homered for the Beach Bums with a go-ahead two-run shot in the fifth, his twelfth homer in 2011.
In game one, Beach Bums reliever Jeff Cinadr (2-2) gave up three runs in an inning to suffer his second loss of the season. Rockford reliever Kevin Patterson (1-3) earned his first win of the year after pitching two scoreless innings on the hill. In game two, Traverse City reliever Scott Reid (1-2) earned his first 2011 victory with 1.2 scoreless innings on the mound while Rockford starter Matt Gibbs (1-5) suffered his fifth loss by allowing seven runs in four innings. Beach Bums closer Scott Mueller finished the contest by throwing the games' final 1.1 innings, earning save number 21 for the righty in 2011.
