Joliet Slammers News Release
(Joliet, IL) - The Joliet Slammers clinched the division Wednesday night and Thursday afternoon they learned the organization had been honored by the Frontier League with three awards.
Bart Zeller won the Frontier League's Rogers Hanners Award as he was named Manager of the Year.
"I just want to thank our owner Al Oremus for the opportunity and making it all possible," Zeller said. "(VP of Baseball Operations) Ron Biga put this team together and (hitting coach) Dan Grunhard and (pitching coach) Carmen Pignatiello put in countless hours of hard work all season."
Zeller served on the coaching staff of the Southern Illinois Miners for four years before being named to lead the Slammers.
"Our success is due to players buying in to our old school philosophy of playing baseball," Zeller said. "Regardless of whether it was 99 or 49 degrees, they played hard and committed themselves to the team, and it resulted in a division title."
General Manager John Dittrich and President Bill Waliewski earned the Frontier League's Executive of the Year award.
"This is an award which is truly given to our entire organization," Dittrich said. "It is a recognition that our staff has earned. We take pride in our operation, and everyone from our ownership to our game day employees and particularly our hard working front office staff is to be congratulated."
Joliet native Ryan Quigley was named to the league's post-season all-star team. Quigley set the Frontier League's single-season saves record this year with 27.
"Quigley put in the work every day to get better and he has been a rock solid closer this year for us," Zeller said. "He's a perfect example of what hard work can lead to for a player."
Voting for awards was done by general managers, coaching staffs, and local media in all 12 Frontier League markets.
Tickets for the playoffs are available at the Slammers Box Office or by calling (815) 722-2287 during business hours. Tickets can be purchased 24/7 at www.jolietslammers.com.
