Bisons Swept in Syracuse Doubleheader

August 19, 2021 - International League (IL)
Buffalo Bisons News Release

Miscues in the field proved costly for the Bisons on Thursday night as the Herd lost a pair of games to the Syracuse Mets, 4-3 and 2-1, from NBT Bank Stadium. Each one-run defeat featured an unearned run scored by the opposition as Buffalo lost back-to-back games for the first time in over two weeks.

Already riding a five-game winning streak entering the doubleheader, Syracuse took advantage of an extra out in the second inning of game one to spur a three-run rally. With runners already on first and second, a sharp groundball up the middle from Cheslor Cuthbert was misplayed by Herd shortstop Christian Colon. Instead of one, maybe two outs, the bases became loaded and the Mets tallied three times on a walk, a single by catcher David Rodriguez and a sacrifice fly. Syracuse then held on a late Bisons charge to win the contest, 4-3.

In game two, a stolen base attempt by Syracuse's David Thompson turned into a run thanks to a pair of Bisons errors on the same play. Kellin Deglan's throw down to the bag skipped into centerfield, where it got under the glove of Forrest Wall to allow Thompson to not only advance to third but score to erase and early 1-0 Buffalo lead.

Though not an error in the box score, game 2's deciding run then came in the Syracuse sixth inning when Herd right fielder Logan Warmoth lost Mason Williams' fly ball in the twilight of the night. When the ball landed safely away from Warmoth, Williams was able to reach second with a leadoff double. Two batters later, Josh Reddick grounded a single past the drawn in infield and into left field to score Williams for the 2-1 Mets lead.

The defense wasn't all bad for the Bisons on Thursday. Centerfielder Josh Palacios made one of the catches of the year when he raced on a Wilfredo Tovar flyball before leaping and reaching back to snag what was sure to be at least a double for the Syracuse slugger.

But along with the errors, the clutch hit eluded the Bisons all night as Buffalo went 0-10 with runners in scoring position in the two games combined. The Herd did come close to a comeback in game one after the early 3-0 deficit. Cullen Large homered to deep right field in the fourth inning to close the deficit to 3-1. With the Herd trailing 4-2 two innings later, Large homered again, driving his seventh of the year just inside the foul pole down the right field line.

Large finished game one a perfect 3-3 with a single to go along with the two home runs.

The Bisons scored their lone run of game two in the first inning when Richard Urena doubled home Cavan Biggio from first with two outs.

Both Bisons starters pitched well enough to win, but neither came out with a victory. After the three-run Syracuse rally in game one, southpaw Nick Allgeyer set down 12 of the final 14 batters he faced. The defeat dropped his record to 4-3 on the season.

Bowden Francis allowed just an unearned run in his five innings of game two, with five strikeouts to only a walk and two hits allowed. He took the no-decision as reliever Anthony Castro was on the hill for the night-aided game-winning Syracuse run.

Top Blue Jays prospect Nate Pearson pitched a perfect 1-2-3 inning of relief in game one and topped out at 101 mph on the in-stadium gun. He needed just eight pitches to pick up a line out, a ground out and a strikeout.

With their division lead down to just a game over second-place Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, the Bisons will take on the Mets again Friday night at 6:35 p.m. with LHP Zach Logue getting the start for Buffalo.

After a pair of consecutive rainouts in Central New York shortened the series between the Thruway rivals, two of the hottest teams in Triple-A East finally got to face each other
