Charlotte Knights News Release
(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - The Charlotte Knights hit six home runs on Sunday en-route to a commanding 14-7 win over the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp. On Wednesday, the Charlotte offense once again pounded out six home runs, but this time, the team won two games in one day.
Charlotte won both games of Wednesday's doubleheader in walk-off fashion over the Norfolk Tides from Truist Field in Uptown Charlotte. The Knights walked-off with a 9-5 win in game one and walked-off with a 6-5 win in game two to complete the two-gam sweep.
In game one, outfielder Mikie Mahtook hit a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning to propel the Knights to the victory. The home run was his second of the game and his team-leading 20th of the season. Mahtook is tied for the third-most home runs in the Triple-A East this season. He had two of Charlotte's five home runs in game one and led the way with five RBIs.
Chicago White Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal began a major league rehab assignment and reached base four times. Grandal, 32, finished the game 3-for-3 at the plate with a home run. In addition to the home runs from Mahtook and Grandal, shortstop Zach Remillard and left fielder Micker Adolfo also homered in game one.
In the nightcap, the Knights once again walked-off with an impressive win. The Knights tied the game in the bottom of the seventh inning on an RBI double by Mahtook. The game then went into extra innings and the Knights won the game in the bottom of the eighth inning thanks to a walk-off double by third baseman Laz Rivera.
Also in game two, Adolfo continued his hot hitting and launched his second home run of the day. Adolfo went 3-for-3 with the home run, two runs scored and two RBIs in game two.
LHP Bennett Sousa (2-1, 3.86) earned the win out of the bullpen after he tossed a scoreless eighth inning. He struck-out two batters in the inning.
The two teams will continue the series with game three on Thursday night at 7:04 p.m. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad and long-time Knights broadcaster Mike Pacheco will have the call on 730 The Game ESPN Charlotte and www.CharlotteKnights.com.
