Buffalo Bisons News Release
ALLENTOWN, PA - After a 14-3 trouncing in the series opener a night ago, the Buffalo Bisons defeated the Lehigh Valley IronPigs by a much more modest score of 4-3 on Wednesday night at Coca-Cola Park.
The starting pitchers were excellent in this one, with both Casey Lawrence and James Marvel, the latter of whom entered tonight with an 0-5 record and a 13.30 ERA, going six innings and allowing just two runs. Lawrence struck out six and walked one, and had a stretch where he retired 11 straight batters from the end of the second inning through the end of the fifth.
Mallex Smith scored on a wild pitch in the third, before Nathan Lukes went deep for his first home run of the season a few batters later. The IronPigs also scored a small-ball run in the first, before catcher Edgar Cabral hit his first homer of the year the following inning.
That was about all the offence in the game until the top of the eighth, when the Bisons loaded the bases with one out and the game tied. Samad Taylor then added to his team-leading RBI total and delivered a two-run single to put the Herd up 4-2.
Adrian Hernandez followed Lawrence and struck out two more batters in yet another perfect inning; the righthander has still not allowed a run and is up to 15.4 strikeouts-per-nine with the Herd this season. Julian Merryweather made his first appearance of the year with the Bisons, and had a clean eighth after joining the team earlier this week.
After an error by Jordan Groshans kept the game alive in the bottom of the ninth, the IronPigs cut the lead in half with an RBI single by Cabral off of Matt Gage. The lefthander would end up walking Drew Maggi to load the bases with two outs in the ninth, with the Bisons clinging to a one-run lead.
Gage battled back from a 2-0 count to get John Andreoli to fly out to left to end the game and secure the 4-3 Buffalo win.
The Bisons and IronPigs will continue their series tomorrow night and will see lefthander Nick Allgeyer matched up against righthander Michael Mariot, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. EST.
