Buffalo Bisons News Release

DES MOINES, IA - The Buffalo Bisons picked up an 11-inning comeback victory over the Iowa Cubs on Thursday night, winning 5-4 from Principal Park in the third game of this six-game series.

Bowden Francis made his ninth start of the season, and despite allowing just one run over 2.1 innings, he did allow seven hits to end his night early. Jake Elliott followed with 1.2 innings and gave up a run off back-to-back doubles, before Matt Peacock made his Bisons debut in the fifth.

Peacock was claimed off waivers by the Blue Jays on July 6 after putting up a 5.40 ERA over 10 big league innings split between Arizona and Kansas City; he gave up a solo homer to Jackson Frazier over his lone inning of work.

The Herd scored twice in the second when Iowa starter Caleb Kilian walked in two runs. Kilian ultimately walked five Bisons over three innings of work, though he also struck out six.

Shaun Anderson threw two scoreless innings with three K's, before Jeremy Beasley had a scoreless ninth to keep the Herd within one.

Down to their final out in the ninth with Otto López on third, a wild pitch that was blocked by I-Cubs catcher Tyler Payne resulted in López being awarded home on a bizarre play that was called a catcher's balk by Payne, tying the game at three.

Beasley stayed on for the bottom half and stranded the winning run at third, sending the game into extras for eighth time all season. Beasley then threw his third shutout inning of relief in the 10th after either side failed to score, sending the game to the 11th.

Chavez Young's RBI single drove in the runner on second to start the 11th, before a heads-up baserunning play saw Young score on a grounder to short to put the Herd up 5-3.

Mike Ellenbest came on in the bottom half looking to record the save, and despite allowing an RBI single to Dixon Machado to make it 5-4, got Levi Jordan to groundout to complete the comeback.

A big positive for the Herd was the return of Toronto top prospect Gabriel Moreno, who played his first game with Buffalo after a month-long stint with the Blue Jays. Moreno singled, doubled, walked twice, stole a base, picked up an RBI, and threw out a runner trying to steal second in his return.

The Bisons and I-Cubs will continue their series tomorrow, with first pitch scheduled slightly later than usual at 8:08 p.m. EST. Thomas Hatch will take the mound for the Herd against a former Blue Jay and Bison in lefthander Matt Dermody.
