Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Jerar Encarnacion and Peyton Burdick slugged home runs in the ninth inning Thursday but the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp comeback fell just short in a 6-4 loss to the Syracuse Mets from NBT Bank Stadium.

Syracuse (39-48) exploded for a four-run second inning to take the first lead of the day. Khalil Lee and Gosuke Katoh stroked back-to-back singles off Jacksonville (46-41) starter Bryan Hoeing (L, 6-5) to start off the inning. Deven Marrero walked to load the bases and Lee scored on a groundout from Tzu-Wei Lin to put Syracuse ahead 1-0. With runners on second and third, Terrance Gore blooped a single, plating Katoh to give the Mets a 2-0 lead. With runners at the corners, Nick Plummer singled home Marrero for a 3-0 advantage while Gore went first to third. In the ensuing at-bat, Francisco Álvarez knocked a sac fly and Syracuse jumped out to a 4-0 lead.

The Jumbo Shrimp plated their first run in the top of the third. With one out, Santiago Chavez singled and advanced to second on a fielding error. After a flyout moved him to third, he scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 4-1.

The Mets continued to pad their lead in the bottom of the seventh. A walk, hit by pitch and another walk started the frame for Syracuse. Two batters later, Mark Vientos walked with the bases loaded, pushing the Syracuse lead to 5-1. Lee followed with a sac fly to give the Mets a 6-1 lead.

Jacksonville made things interesting in the ninth against Syracuse reliever Michel Otañez. Encarnacion (7) blasted a solo home run to pull the Jumbo Shrimp within 6-2. JJ Bleday followed with a single. Peyton Burdick (11) walloped a two-run home run in the next at-bat to make it a two-run game, 6-4. However, Otañez retired the next three batters to end the game.

Jacksonville will turn to RHP Max Meyer (3-4, 3.72) and LHP Nate Fisher (0-1, 3.08) will start for Syracuse in Friday's 6:35 p.m. contest. Coverage begins at 6:20 p.m. ET on ESPN 690 and espn690.com.
