LAST TIME OUT
MOOSIC, PA (July 13, 2022) - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders dropped a 10-3 game to the Louisville Bats on Wednesday. The RailRiders tallied two homers in the loss, which snapped a nine-game home winning streak.
Louisville tagged Matt Krook for a pair of runs in the second inning on a pair of solo homers from Taylor Motter and Chris Okey. In the fifth inning, Krook struck out MLB rehabber Jake Fraley as a part of a 1-2-3 frame with three strikeouts. The punchout was his 100th of the season. The southpaw is on pace to easily break a Scranton/Wilkes-Barre - Yankees affiliated record. Brett Marshall struck out 120 batters in 2013, the most in the Yankees-affiliated era.
The two traded a pair of runs in the sixth inning. After a sac fly in the top of the inning, the RailRiders got on the board with a Phillip Evans RBI single to make it 3-1. Louisville responded with three runs in the top of the seventh off Braden Bristo. It was keyed by a Cristian Santana two-run single to make the game 6-1. Estevan Florial, who just missed a home run earlier in the game off the top of the centerfield wall, sent a solo home run to dead-center for his team-leading twelfth long ball of the year. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre couldn't mount a comeback however after the Bats plated four in the eighth inning to cruise to a 10-3 win to even the series, despite an impressive Miguel Andújar homer in the eighth.
Krook (5-7) was saddled with the loss, his first since June 12. Randy Wynne (3-9) tossed six innings of one-run ball and took the win.
NEWS & NOTES
FIRST THINGS FIRST - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders welcome the Louisville bats for their first trip to PNC Field since July 19-21, 2019 (Louisville won series 2-1). The Bats are just the second western division team the RailRiders have faced this year, the other being the Toledo Mud Hens (split series 3-3 in Ohio).
GO SHAWTY - Today, the RailRiders celebrate three birthdays. Armando Alvarez turns 28, Tim Locastro turns 30 and Rob Brantly turns 33. It's the first time the RailRiders celebrate multiple birthdays on one day this season. Strangely enough, yesterday (July 13) the Seattle Mariners also celebrated three birthdays (Kyle Lewis - 27, Ty France - 28 and Casey Sadler -32).
REUNION - Today, the New York Yankees announced that they have acquired INF/OF Tyler Wade from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations. According to multiple reports, he will join the RailRiders soon. Wade, who was drafted and developed by New York, has played 255 games with the RailRiders from 2017 to 2019 where he hit .281 with 15 home runs and 96 RBI.
WHERE THE HEART IS - The RailRiders' nine-game home winning streak ended with a 10-3 loss last night. It was their longest home winning streak since the RailRiders won eleven straight from July 22 to August 10, 2016. The longest home winning streak in franchise history lasted fourteen games from May 22 to June 11, 1992.
MAKIN' MOVES - Late last night, the Yankees optioned JP Sears back to the RailRiders. Prior to yesterday's game, the Yankees released Greg Bird and David Freitas, who were both with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
FLOR-ISHING - Estevan Florial's eleven-game hitting streak came to an end Tuesday. Still, he finds himself 18 for his last 49 with seven homers and eight doubles through a thirteen-game on-base streak. His longest this season is fifteen, which lasted from April 24 to May 15. Florial is slashing .359/.457/.923 in the month of July while tallying a hit in nine of ten games this month.
BREAUX-MANCE - Josh Breaux joined the RailRiders from Double-A Somerset on July 2 and has gone ten for his first sixteen (.625) with three RBI, a triple, home run and three walks. When Breaux left Somerset, he was batting just .204 in 53 games. He enters tonight's game with a four-game hitting streak.
BAUERS POWER - After hitting one home run with the RailRiders in his first 19 games, Jake Bauers has hit three over the course of his last five games. His slugging percentage has jumped forty-six points in that span (.297 to .343). Bauers is slashing .276/.462/.621 in July. His homer on Tuesday came against the Bats, whom he has played before but was the first time he had seen them since being traded to the Yankees by the Reds. Bauers played 29 games with Louisville earlier this season.
BUY ONE, GET ONE - The RailRiders hit back-to-back homers on Tuesday thanks to Josh Breaux and Jake Bauers. It was the first time this season any RailRider batters were able to complete the feat. The last time the RailRiders hit back-to-back homers was from Donny Sands and Armando Alvarez on July 20, 2021 against Rochester.
ON DECK - The RailRiders square off with Louisville tomorrow. Friday is Margaritaville Night. The RailRiders will wear Margaritaville-inspired Hawaiian jerseys presented by Giant. These jerseys will be auctioned off to benefit the Children's Miracle Network. It's also First Responder Friday and Friday Night Fireworks, presented by NEPA Crane & Hauling and 98.5 KRZ.
STREAKY -Greg Weissert has not been charged with a run in eleven straight appearances, the longest stretch for any RailRiders pitcher this season... Shane Greene and Jimmy Cordero are on four-game scoreless streaks... Phillip Evans is on a six-game hit streak and a seven-game on-base streak...
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION - The New York Yankees (62-26) rattled off a comeback and walkoff win over the Reds yesterday 7-6 in ten innings. The Yankees trailed 4-0 and 6-5 at different points before walking off on a wild pitch to snap a three-game slide. Nestor Cortes faces Luis Castillo tonight at 7:05 PM... The Somerset Patriots (51-32) handled the Portland Sea Dogs 5-1 Wednesday. Will Warren allowed just one run in seven innings of work. They played a day game today against Portland... The Hudson Valley Renegades dropped a day game yesterday to the Greenville Drive 9-4. Spencer Henson went 2-for-5 with a home run. Beck Way starts tonight at 7:05 PM... The Tampa Tarpons (38-44) defeated the Daytona Tortugas 2-1 to even the series. Marcos Cabrera hit a solo homer for the eventual winning run. Yon Castro toes to the slab tonight at 6:30 PM...
