Iowa Cubs News Release

IOWA CUBS (38-47) vs. BUFFALO BISONS (44-42)

Thursday - 6:38 PM - Principal Park - Des Moines, IA

RHP Caleb Kilian (2-1, 3.83) vs. RHP Bowden Francis (5-7, 7.89)

TONIGHT'S GAME: Caleb Kilian will take the ball for Iowa tonight in game three of their six-game series against the Bisons. Kilian enters the game with a 2-1 record and a 3.83 ERA through 13 starts this year, allowing 23 earned runs on 57 hits and 20 walks. The right-hander leads the team in strikeouts with 64 and is second on the roster in innings pitched with 54.0. Opposite of Kilian will be Bowden Francis getting the nod for Buffalo, set to make his ninth start and 20th appearance of the year. Francis is 5-7 with a 7.89 ERA this year with the Bisons, allowing 50 earned runs over his 57.0 innings. The righty has allowed 63 hits and 26 walks while striking out 59 this year. He made one start against the I-Cubs in their first series at Buffalo to open the year, throwing 4.2 innings of two-run ball, allowing just three hits including two solo home runs while striking out five.

JACKSON IN ACTION: Jackson Frazier went 1-for-3 with a run scored last night, extending his hitting streak to five games, which ties his season high. He has now hit safely in ten of his last 11 games, boosting his season average with Iowa to .245. After starting his I-Cubs career with a .195 average (8-for-41) over his first ten games, Frazier has turned it on. Since the calendar flipped to July, he has gone 14-for-38 through 11 games. That has given him a .368 average and a team-leading .711 slugging percentage this month. He has also collected 15 RBI over that span, which is the most by an I-Cub this month, and accounts for over a quarter of Iowa's total run production (15-of-54) in July.

BOUNCE BACK: In his last start, which came on Friday in Indianapolis, Caleb Kilian gave up a career-high seven earned runs in three innings of work, earning him his first Triple-A loss. The eight hits he surrendered also set a career high, while the seven total runs and two home runs he allowed tied career marks. Coming into that game, Kilian had compiled a 2-0 record and a 2.82 ERA through his first 12 starts at this level. Before his Major League debut on June 4, he held a Triple-A best 2.06 ERA in nine starts. After shuffling between Iowa and Chicago for the month of June, however, Kilian has been less consistent. In the three starts he's made since returning to Iowa most recently, he has allowed 11 earned runs, which is just one less than he allowed in the previous ten starts combined. Despite the recent trouble, Kilian still leads Iowa's roster in strikeouts (64) while placing second in innings pitched (54.0) and ERA among pitchers with at least five starts (3.83).

LONG TIME OFF: Aneuris Rosario pitched for the first time in eight days last night, with his most recent outing coming back on July 4 against Indianapolis. The righty showed no signs of not pitching in a game for over a week, coming in with two runners on in the sixth and stranding them both to get out of the jam. His two stranded runners last night put him at a 75% clip on the year in stranding runners he has inherited, stranding 12 of the 16 bequeathed runners. Rosario ended up tossing 1.2 perfect innings last night, inducing two ground outs and two fly outs while getting help from his team on a caught stealing. It marked just his fifth game all year out of 22 in which he has not recorded at least one strikeout.

FIRST SIGN OF TROUBLE: Outfielder Darius Hill has been a big piece of Iowa's offense ever since he joined the team from Double-A Tennessee back on May 31. In his first 27 games with the I-Cubs, Hill hit .376 (41-for-109) including 14 multi-hit games and 21 games with at least one hit. The 24-year-old was slotted straight into the top of the lineup and was constantly reaching base. Since his last multi-hit game back on July 6 against Indianapolis, Hill has gone just 2-for-20 in his last six games, hitting .100 with one double and two runs batted in. It is the first real slump for the outfielder since joining Iowa, going hitless in three of his five games played in the stretch. Hill has led the team in batting average for the majority of the time he has been on the roster and is now second on the active roster with a .333 average. He is hitting .333 (43-for-129) with 20 runs scored, 10 doubles, seven runs batted in, eight walks and 16 strikeouts in 32 games.

CAN'T STOP, WON'T STOP: For the second consecutive night, Dixon Machado collected three hits, going 3-for-4 with two runs batted in. In the series, the infielder is now 6-for-8 with a double six runs batted in and a walk. All six runs he has driven in have come with two outs. His three-hit game last night gave him seven three-hit games on the year and 22 multi-hit games this year, both good for team highs. Not only does he lead the team with seven three-hit games and 22 multi-hit efforts, he also leads the team in hits (89), doubles (15), walks (43) and on-base percentage (.398). The 30-year-old ranks third in batting average (.304), fifth in on-base percentage (.398) and seventh in hits (89) among all International League players, while sitting in ninth in batting average and eighth in hits in all of Triple-A. He was in the top spot in the lineup for the 69th game of the year last night, leading off now in 81% (69-of-85) of Iowa's games. With six hits in his last two games, Machado is now hitting .304 (89-for-293) this year. Machado has played in 88% (75-of-85) of Iowa's games this year, three more than the second player and 15 more than the player with the third most games played.

AGAINST BUFFALO: Iowa and Buffalo are set to play game three of their six-game series tonight, with the series currently tied at one game apiece. Iowa won game one by a score of 8-2 on Tuesday and lost 8-4 last night, putting the season scoring at 30-29 in favor of Buffalo through the first eight games the two teams they have played. Not only do they lead the season scoring by one run, but they also now lead in the season series by by two games, at 5-3. With the loss last night, Iowa is now 1-1 against Buffalo this year at Principal Park, 61-44 against the Bisons all-time at home and 111-105 overall all-time against Buffalo.

SHORT HOPS: Cam Sanders walked five batters in his outing last night, tying the most walks surrendered by a single pitcher for Iowa this year...LJ Talley is currently on a five-game hitting streak against Iowa dating back to Opening Day on April 5.
