Bakersfield Condors News Release

Bakersfield, Calif. - The sixth annual Teddy Bear Toss was a night to remember. A two-goal comeback for a victory by the Condors, the third largest crowd in Condors history, and a new record of 7,149 stuffed animals collected by the United Way.

Shattering last season's total by nearly a thousand teddy bears, this season's donation was a jaw-dropping scene of flying fur that continued for several minutes after Connor James' goal at 5:46 of the third period. The crowd of 8,204 erupted with the rookie's lamplighter, and then proceeded to demonstrate why the event is one of the most anticipated games of the year. It was the largest crowd at a Condors game in over four years and the six-year total for the event's history is 26,235. 29 Eyewitness News, KERN News Talk 1410 and Wells Fargo Bank sponsored the night.

"The Teddy Bear Toss here in Bakersfield is amazing event," said Condors President Matthew Riley. "It's an incredible sight to see all the teddy bears flying through the air. We can't say enough about the participation and support of our fans every year for this, and we're glad we can be here to help those less fortunate."

"The Teddy Bear Toss is a good example of how United Way of Kern County works with partners throughout the community," said Della Hodson, director of communications at United Way of Kern County and chief teddy bear counter. "We are very thankful for the continued dedication to Condors fans for the success of this event. We're pleased to be able to facilitate the distribution of teddy bears to thousands of children in need, not just during this holiday season, but throughout the year. Many of the agencies that receive these toys through the United Way will use them all year long to comfort children in crisis."

The Condors host the Fresno Falcons this Thursday for the first-ever Businessperson's Special and Kids' Field Trip Day Game, starting at 10:30 a.m. Doors will open at 9:30 a.m. and anyone arriving after 11:30 can purchase 2-for-1 tickets. The game is sponsored by FOX 58, KERN News Talk 1410, the Bakersfield Californian and Arrival Communications. There will be food specials for everyone and a Condors educational handout for kids attending the game.
