
Abbotsford sweeps Texas

Abbotsford, BC, Canada - The Texas Stars (21-13-2-4, 48 points) were defeated by the Abbotsford Heat (20-16-2-3, 45 points) 4-2 on Saturday night at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre. Heat winger Riley Armstrong broke a 2-2 tie with a power-play goal just 1:14 into the third period, giving Abbotsford the two-game sweep. Stars forwards Mathieu Tousignant and Travis Morin each scored, as Texas fell to 11-7-1-2 on the road this season. Despite making 35 saves, Texas goalie Matt Climie (10-12-3) suffered the defeat. Abbotsford goalie Matt Keetley (8-4-2) made 32 saves, leading the Heat to their fourth straight win. The Stars return home to host San Antonio at 7:30 PM on Tuesday, Jan. 12 at Cedar Park Center.
Abbotsford scored the first goal of the night just 21 seconds into the game. Defenseman Gord Baldwin blasted a shot to the Texas net, with Stars goalie Matt Climie making the initial save. Heat forward Brett Sutter picked up a rebound in front of the Texas net and lifted a backhand shot into the net for his fifth goal of the year and a 1-0 Abbotsford lead after one period of play.
In the second period, Texas stormed back to tie the game 1-1 with a shorthanded goal at 2:46. Forward Travis Morin stole the puck at his own blueline and raced in alone for a breakaway. Morin lifted a wrist shot over the blocker of Matt Keetley, scoring his seventh goal of the year. Abbotsford countered at 10:52, winger Pete Vandermeer carried the puck in behind the Texas net and centered to the crease. Rookie Michael Backlund scooped up the pass and shuffled a backhand shot past Climie for his ninth goal of the year and a 2-1 Heat lead. The Stars would tie the game 2-2 before the end of the period, scoring off a rebound in front of the Abbotsford net. Winger Tyler Shelast worked the puck to the Heat crease and Mathieu Tousignant fired in the loose puck for his first AHL goal, tying the game with 8:45 left in the middle period. Stars goalie Matt Climie made 18 saves in the second period.
Abbotsford regained the lead just 1:14 into the third period with a power-play goal. Winger Riley Armstrong scored off a loose scramble in the Texas crease. Armstrong found a rebound and snapped in his eighth goal of the year for the 3-2 lead early in the final period. The Heat's leading scorer, Jason Jaffray netted a shorthanded goal with 3:37 left in the game for the 4-2 Abbotsford win.
The Stars return home to host San Antonio at 7:30 PM on Tuesday, Jan. 12 at Cedar Park Center. The first 3,000 fans receive a Texas Stars Puck Bottle Opener. The Stars will also host the Toronto Marlies at 7:30 PM on Friday, Jan. 15, handing out Texas Stars Fleece Blankets to the first 2,000 fans.
