Beaumont, TX (March 15, 2004) â The Texas Wildcatters split their two-game series with the Columbus Cottonmouths this weekend after losing Thursday night to the Mississippi Sea Wolves. On Thursday, game 12 of the Nextel Cup returned to Biloxi as the Sea Wolves defeated the Wildcatters 4-2. Texas trailed 3-0 in the third period until Chris Taliercio ripped a shot from the right wing boards to get Texas on the scoreboard. Ashlee Langdone and Aaron MacInnis assisted on Taliercio's third goal of the season. Martin Masa would pull the Wildcatters within one at the 9:24 mark of the third period with his team-leading 19th goal of the year. Rob Davidson made the play with his hard work in the far corner and passed it to Masa in front of the Mississippi net. Sergei Kuznetsov halted the comeback with an empty net goal with 35 seconds left in the game for Mississippi.
On Friday, Texas traveled to Columbus to face the Cottonmouths for a pair of games. A shootout would determine this game as Martin Masa tallied the decisive goal for the Wildcatters. Mark Jackson, Cory Morgan, and Ryan Fultz each had two points in the game for Texas. Netminder Mark Scally earned his first win of the year as he turned away 43 of the 46 shots he faced, including four of five in the shootout.
Skating with only 13 players on Saturday, the Wildcatters came up short to the Cottonmouths, losing 5-1. Ryan Fultz put Texas on the scoreboard at the 14:57 mark of the third period with his ninth goal of the season. Martin Masa and Mark Jackson assisted on the goal. The Wildcatters finished the four-game season series against Columbus with a record of 2-1-1.
Player of the Week Nomination: Defenseman Mark Jackson recorded three points (1g-2a) in three games this week. Jackson has tallied eight points (2g-6a) in as many games since joining the Wildcatters on February 28.
Goalie of the Week Nomination: Mark Scally earned his first win of the season Friday night against Columbus. Scally finished the game with 43 saves, including four in the shootout.
Smital Loaned To San Antonio Rampage of AHL: Wildcatters forward Lukas Smital was loaned to the San Antonio Rampage of the AHL for a pair of games this past weekend against the Houston Aeros. In his two games, Smital took three shots on goal.
Branham Records First Point In Portland: Wildcatters defenseman Tim Branham, who has been with the Portland Pirates since December 11, recorded his first point with an assist in a 4-3 loss to Lowell last Wednesday. In 29 games with Portland this season, Branham is a â4 with 14 penalty minutes and 14 shots on goal.
Texas Point Producers:
- Forward Ryan Fultz has recorded six points (4g-2a) in his last four games.
- Right Wing Cory Morgan has tallied five points (2g-3a) in his last five games.
- Defenseman Mark Jackson has recorded eight points (2g-6a) in his first eight games with Texas this season. Jackson is also on a two-game point streak in which he has three points (1g-2a).
