SYRACUSE, N.Y. - A late five run spurt led the Syracuse Mets (4-10) to a 10-8 win, holding off a four homer onslaught from the Worcester Red Sox (9-6) at NBT Bank Stadium on Thursday night.

The WooSox trailed first in just three of their first 12 games, but for the second time in three chances, Syracuse jumped out to the early advantage. Starter Darwinzon Hernandez walked Wyatt Young to begin the bottom of the first, and after a groundout and wild pitch, a Daniel Palka RBI groundout brought Young home.

Still up 1-0 in the bottom of the second, Hernandez put Khalil Lee on with a leadoff walk. Two batters later, Quinn Brodey smashed a two-run home run to center. Hernandez then walked two in a row and hit Young, the final pitch of his outing. John Schreiber entered out of the bullpen, and allowed a two-run single to center from Daniel Palka, putting the Mets up 5-0.

Hernandez allowed five earned runs over 1.2 innings of work, walking four and striking out one in a 45-pitch outing.

But the WooSox offense answered, scoring five times in the next three innings to tie the game. Yolmer Sanchez began the comeback with a solo shot to right in the third, Ryan Fitzgerald delivered a three-run jack in the fourth and Triston Casas tied the game in the fifth with long ball off the batter's eye in center. Fitzgerald's homer marked his fifth of the season, while Casas' gave him his fourth.

In the bottom of the fifth, Palka gave the Mets the lead on a solo shot to left center off Schreiber, an advantage that would hold for the rest of the day. Syracuse tacked on four more in the sixth on a three-run double by Young on a ball that just found its way down the left field line. Palka added a run-scoring double two batters later to put the home team up 10-5.

Worcester threatened in the ninth-it got within two on a three-run blast by Christin Stewart and put the tying runs in scoring position, but a sliding grab by Cody Bohanek on a bloop to left sealed the 10-8 final.

Offensively, the WooSox scored 10 runs on four home runs and posted a season-high 10 walks in the loss.

The WooSox continue the six-game series Friday on the road against the Syracuse Mets. On the mound, Kyle Hart, who is off to a 3-0 start in 2022, faces Connor Gray. Radio coverage is live at 6:15 p.m. on 98.9 Nash Icon and the WooSox Radio Network.
