Iowa Cubs News Release
DES MOINES, IA - Despite a season-high 15 hits, the Iowa Cubs (7-7) lost in extra-innings to the Louisville Bats (5-10) by a score of 7-6.
Iowa jumped on Louisville starter Bernardo Flores, scoring two runs in the top of the second, one in the top of the third, and two more in the top of the fourth on an Alfonso Rivas double to take a 5-0 lead. In all, Flores Jr. allowed five earned runs on 12 hits over his 3.2 innings pitched.
Louisville got one back in the home half of the fourth on an RBI single from Allen Cordoba, the only run they would score against Caleb Kilian. In his third start of the year, Kilian tied a season long for an I-Cubs starting pitcher, throwing five innings.
The No. 4 prospect in Chicago's system allowed just the one earned run on three hits, while walking one and striking out four. The game stayed knotted at 5-1 until the seventh inning, when Michael De Leon hit a two-run blast to cut the lead in half.
Iowa took that 5-3 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning, but with four walks, a wild pitch and an error, Louisville scored two runs to tie the game and send it to extras. The I-Cubs scored a run on a sacrifice fly from Tyler Payne in the top of the tenth, but Louisville never went away.
The Bats got back-to-back RBI doubles from former Cub Albert Almora Jr. and Cristian Santana to win the game 7-6, handing Iowa their second straight loss.
POSTGAME NOTES:
- All nine starters in Iowa's lineup recorded a hit tonight, while the top three in the lineup each had multi-hit games. Dixon Machado (2), Ildemaro Vargas (3) and Alfonso Rivas (4) combined for 60% (9-of-15) of Iowa's season-high 15 hits tonight.
- Despite leaving the game with a 5-1 lead and in line for the first win for an I-Cubs starter this year, Caleb Kilian received a no-decision when the Bats came back and tied the game in the ninth inning.
- After back-to-back errorless games from Iowa, they committed three tonight, moving their total to 18 on the year.
- With the loss, Iowa moves to 1-1 in extra innings this year. Their first extra-inning game came on Saturday, ending in a 3-2 walk-off win against the Toledo Mud Hens.
Iowa and Louisville will play game four of their six-game series Friday, with first pitch between the two teams scheduled for 7:05 PM ET at Louisville Slugger Field. For more information and tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
