Worcester Red Sox News Release
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - One late swing from the Syracuse Mets (6-11) gave the Worcester Red Sox (10-8) a loss in the series finale on Sunday afternoon, a 4-2 defeat at NBT Bank Stadium.
The WooSox led 2-1 entering the bottom of the eighth inning, but the Mets began a threat with a leadoff walk from Nick Dini. Working against reliever Geoff Hartlieb, Wyatt Young singled to center, putting two on for Nick Plummer. The left-hander saw three pitches, then crushed the fourth over the right field wall for a go-ahead three-run home run. That was the eventual game-winning swing, as Worcester was held scoreless in the top of the ninth, sealing the road team's sixth loss in seven games.
The 2-1 advantage was built early on-after Ryan Fitzgerald doubled to put two in scoring position in the second, Johan Mieses' RBI groundout made it 1-0. Half an inning later, Syracuse tied it in the bottom of the frame with a Khalil Lee RBI single.
After Grant Williams reached on an error to lead off the third, he stole third base, putting a runner in scoring position. Jarren Duran took advantage, singling to right to bring home Williams to make it 2-1 WooSox. That would ultimately be the final hit of the game for Worcester, who did not score over the final six innings and was held to a season-low four hits.
On the mound, starter Brian Keller gave up the run in the second, going three innings and striking out four. Silvino Bracho, Derek Holland and Eduard Bazardo combined for four innings of scoreless relief before Hartlieb allowed the three-run homer in the eighth.
The WooSox are off Monday and begin a six-game series versus the Buffalo Bisons on Tuesday at Polar Park. Connor Seabold, who has tossed 11 straight scoreless innings, faces Buffalo's Casey Lawrence.. Radio coverage is live at 6:25 p.m. on 100.1 FM The Pike, 98.9 Nash Icon and the WooSox Radio Network.
