Durham Bulls News Release
NORFOLK, Va. - Durham relief pitcher Tyler Zombro completed his comeback to the mound by appearing in his first regular season game in 325 days as designated hitter David Rodriguez mashed three hits, including a homer, and drove in three runs in the Bulls' 14-5 victory over the Norfolk Tides on Sunday afternoon at Harbor Park.
Zombro entered the game for the start of the second inning, with both teams coming out of their respective dugouts and on to the field to applaud Zombro when his name was announced. It was Zombro's first appearance since suffering a horrific head injury after being hit by a batted ball while pitching for the Bulls against Norfolk at Durham Bulls Athletic Park on June 3, 2021.
Zombro in his return on Sunday afternoon worked around a leadoff double to toss a scoreless outing. He did not factor in the final decisions, while fellow Bulls reliever Dalton Moats (1.1 IP, 3 K) earned the win. Tides righty Ofelky Peralta (0.1 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER) received the loss.
After Norfolk plated two first-inning scores, Durham evened the contest in the third courtesy of CF Ryan Boldt's two-run single. The Tides would counter with a two-spot in the last of the third before the Bulls answered with a six-run fourth highlighted by 1B Jonathan Aranda's two-run homer to right-center. 2B Miles Mastrobuoni and 3B Isaac Paredes each drew bases-loaded walks in the fifth to make it 10-4. Following a single score from Norfolk in the last of the fifth, Aranda lofted a sacrifice fly to drive in his third run of the game in the seventh prior to C Ford Proctor's RBI double to right. DH David Rodriguez capped the Bulls' scoring with a two-run shot to left-center in the eighth.
Eight of nine Bulls batters collected at least one hit, with Rodriguez (3-4, 4 R, HR, 3 RBI, BB) pacing the visiting side with his three knocks. Aranda (2-3, 2 R, HR, 3 RBI, BB), Mastrobuoni (2-4, R, 3 RBI, 2 BB), Paredes (2-5, R, RBI, BB) and RF Ruben Cardenas (2-5, 3 R, 2B) each tallied two knocks. Norfolk RF Tyler Nevin (3-4, 2 R, 2B, BB) led his squad with three hits.
Following a league-wide off day on Monday, the Bulls return to Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Tuesday, April 26 to start a six-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals' Triple-A affiliate, the Memphis Redbirds. First pitch of the series opener is set for 11:05am. Tickets for that game and all remaining 2022 home dates can be purchased at DurhamBulls.com/tickets.
