LOUISVILLE, KY - The Iowa Cubs (9-8) will head back to Des Moines with a series split against the Louisville Bats (6-12) after completing an 8-4 win in the Sunday finale at Louisville Slugger Field.

Iowa took leadoff walks from Randy Wynne in each of the first two innings, but could not advance either runner past first base. Finally, in the third, Ildemaro Vargas tripled to drive in Dixon Machado for the first run of the game. Jared Young then drove in Vargas with a sacrifice fly, and Iowa led 2-0.

The Bats kicked off their own scoring against Iowa starter Robert Gsellman in the bottom half of the third. They strung together three straight singles from the top half of their order to cut the Iowa lead in half and tag Gsellman for his first run of the season.

The I-Cubs had a quick answer, however. Robel Garcia took Wynne deep in the fourth for his first home run of the season to make it a 3-1 game. He followed it up with his second homer of the day in the sixth inning, this time with two men on, to increase the Iowa lead to five.

Louisville attempted a comeback against Iowa's bullpen, scoring two in the seventh and one in the eighth, but it wasn't enough. Iowa added two more unearned runs on a fielding error by the Bats, and then Eric Stout shut Louisville down in the ninth to secure the win for Iowa by a final score of 8-4.

POSTGAME NOTES:

Garcia's two-homer performance was the second by an I-Cub this year and this series after Jared Young hit two in the opener on Tuesday. Garcia's second home run today was the first three-run shot of the season for Iowa.

Robert Gsellman earned the win, his first of the season and the second by an Iowa starter.

Ildemaro Vargas and Donnie Dewees both recorded at least one hit today, extending their hitting streaks to six games, which is the season-high by an I-Cubs hitter this season.

Vargas' triple was his fourth of the series and the season. He is now tied for first in Triple-A baseball.

Iowa will take the day off tomorrow before returning to Principal Park to begin a six-game set with Indianapolis on Tuesday. First pitch of game one is set for 6:38pm. For more information and tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
