Memphis Redbirds News Release
MEMPHIS, TN - The Memphis Redbirds comeback fell short in a 9-7 loss to the Omaha Storm Chasers at AutoZone Park on Sunday afternoon.
The Memphis bullpen settled things down tremendously after an eight-run top of the first. In the final eight frames, Redbirds relievers would allow just one run and finished the game with seven consecutive scoreless innings.
Tommy Parsons, James Naile, Brandon Waddell, Kyle Ryan and Junior Fernandez combined to toss 8.1 innings in relief and struck out eight Storm Chasers. The latter four did not allow a run in a combined 6.0 innings pitched.
The Memphis lineup got things rolling in the bottom of the fourth inning on Nolan Gorman's eighth home run of the season. The two-run blast was the second baseman's first multi-run homer of the season and tallied his first runner driven in other than himself.
Right fielder Alec Burleson followed with a triple, the first Redbirds three-bagger in 2022. Burleson was driven in by catcher Ali Sanchez, his first RBI this season.
Burleson's day only got better from there. In the bottom of the seventh inning, he powered his fifth home run of the season with a solo shot to make the score 9-4.
First baseman Brendan Donovan added his first home run of the season in the ninth inning on a two-run blast to pull Memphis within two, but the comeback would fall short.
The Memphis Redbirds (9-9) will travel to Durham, North Carolina to take on the Durham Bulls for a six-game road trip after a Monday day off.
