Worcester Red Sox News Release

WORCESTER, M.A. - The Worcester Red Sox (14-15) and Buffalo Bisons (12-17) split a doubleheader at Polar Park on Thursday, a 4-1 WooSox win in game one and a 2-1 Bisons victory in game two. The Worcester victory gave the team a season-best six-game win streak, while the defeat marked the team's first loss since April 26.

In game one, the WooSox jumped out to an early lead, one they would not give back. In the bottom of the first, Bobby Dalbec smacked a two-out double down the left field line, and Wilyer Abreu followed with an RBI single to put the home team on top. After Greg Allen singled, Daniel Palka blooped his fourth RBI single in his last four games to make it 2-0.

Worcester starter Bryan Mata went four innings, walking six but only allowing a single run. He struck out one and allowed his lone run on a bases-loaded walk to Spencer Horwitz in the third.

In the fourth, David Hamilton blasted his second home run in as many games, the sixth of his first Triple-A season. Hamilton is now slashing .299/.367/.557 with 12 extra-base-hits, 15 RBI and after game two, a league-leading 16 stolen bases.

Joely Rodríguez, on Boston's injured list since March 30 with an oblique strain, took the hill in his first regular season appearance for the Red Sox organization. Rodríguez posted a runless fifth and allowed one hit, but got through the inning on 11 pitches (8 strikes); he also earned the win. Jake Faria and Chase Shugart tossed scoreless sixth and seventh innings, respectively, and Shugart earned the save in Worcester's sixth consecutive victory.

In game two, Matt Dermody turned in a six-inning complete game for the WooSox. The left-hander posted the following line: 6 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 5 K.

Worcester was the road team in game two, making up a game that was scheduled to be played in Buffalo in April. In the top of the sixth of the seven-inning affair, Abreu walked and Jorge Alfaro singled to put two on with one out for Allen. He got to a 1-1 count, then slapped a single to center, putting the WooSox up 1-0.

Dermody got the first out of the sixth before Buffalo's Cam Eden reached on an infield single. Rafael Lantigua lifted a double down the right field line to tie the game, got to third on the throw, then scored on an RBI groundout from Ernie Clement. In the span of seven pitches, that sequence gave the Bisons the lead.

Worcester put the tying run on in the top of the seventh, but a double play and strikeout ended the night, finishing off a doubleheader split.

On the bases, Hamilton and Allen each stole two bags, taking over first and second in the International League, respectively, and adding to the team's league-leading total of 53.

The WooSox continue the homestand on Friday night at 6:45 p.m. against the Buffalo Bisons, affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays. On the mound, James Paxton (1-3, 7.02) makes another rehab appearance, facing Drew Hutchison (0-1, 2.25). Television coverage is on NESN+, while radio coverage is live at 6:25 p.m. on 98.9 Nash Icon and the WooSox Radio Network.
