RailRiders and Red Wings split doubleheader

The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders split Thursday's doubleheader with the Rochester Red Wings. SWB won the first contest 6-1 with dominating pitching by Mitch Spence. Rochester took the second contest 9-6 despite a long homer from Jamie Westbrook and a late rally in the seventh.

Game 1 - SWB 6, ROC 1

The RailRiders got off to a great start in game one. Franchy Cordero singled to reach and Andres Chaparro doubled him home. An RBI single from Ben Rortvedt gave SWB a 2-0 lead.

Rochester cut the lead in half with a solo shot from Matt Adams in the top of the fourth.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre put on some insurance runs in the bottom half. Rortvedt doubled to start off the frame. Jesus Bastidas was walked and Billy McKinney was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jose Godoy popped a ball into left field to drive in two runs.

In the fifth, Kole Calhoun smashed his first homer of the season that traveled 420 feet. Calhoun and Chaparro, who walked, trotted home for a 6-1 advantage.

Mitch Spence (W, 2-2) tossed a quality start with six innings on 78 offerings. He allowed just one run on seven hits. The righty walked none and struck out six. Greg Weissert recorded two strikeouts in a clean seventh.

Wily Peralta (L, 0-2) pitched 3.1 innings letting up four runs on six hits. Alberto Baldenado got out of the fourth with a double play, but gave up the two-run homer in the fifth. Tyler Danish finished the last one and two thirds frames clean.

Game 2 - ROC 9, SWB 6

Rochester got the upper hand in the first inning putting up six runs. The first nine batters reached with six hits and two hit by pitches. Wilson Garcia doubled home two runs, while Kevin Plawecki sent in two as well.

The RailRiders cut that lead in half in the bottom of the third. Jesus Bastidas led off with a base hit. Estevan Florial doubled to put them both in scoring position. Jamie Westbrook's three-run homer to right got the RailRiders on the board down just 6-3.

In the sixth the Red Wings put on another. Darren Baker singled to reach and moved over to third as the bases were loaded. Travis Blakenhorn pushed him across the plate for a 7-3 lead.

Rochester added two more an inning later. Richie Martin doubled and Baker walked to reach. Jake Alu's two-run double gave them a 9-3 advantage.

SWB went down swinging in the seventh. Elijah Dunham led off with a walk and Andres Chaparro singled. Franchy Cordero's base knock allowed Dunham to cross the plate. Rodolfo Duran followed with a double to plate Chaparro and a sacrifice fly from Michael Hermosillo brought in another. The RailRiders fell 9-6.

Sean Boyle (L, 1-2) got one out in the first but left with two on. He gave up six runs on six hits. DJ Snelten stranded two on the base paths to get out of the first. He put up a zero in the second. Deivi Garcia pitched two clean despite three hits and two walks. Michael Gomez had a quick 1-2-3 fifth. James Norwood allowed one run on two hits in his inning. Shawn Semple allowed two runs in the seventh.

Tommy Romero threw three frames out of the gate. He gave up three runs on four hits. Jose Mujica (W, 1-0) pitched 1.2 clean, striking out two. Jose Ferrer tossed a zero on the scoreboard in his inning. Jordan Weems recorded the final out of the sixth. Weems let up three runs on three hits at the end of the contest.

The RailRiders take on the Red Wings tomorrow at 6:35 PM. Righty Randy Vasquez will get the start for the home team, while Paolo Espino gets the ball for Rochester.
