IL1 Buffalo Bisons

Wolf and Offense Blank Chiefs, 7-0

July 20, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Buffalo Bisons News Release

Randy Wolf had a solid start on the hill for the Herd on Monday night. The lefty picked up his sixth win, pitching 7.2 shutout innings as the Bisons blanked the Syracuse Chiefs, 7-0, at Coca-Cola Field.

The southpaw set a single-game record for strikeouts with nine, retiring ten straight through five innings. Wolf now ranks in the top six pitchers in the IL with a 2.72 ERA.

"I felt like I've pitched well," Wolf said. "I've been consistent and I've been able to go six, seven innings pretty much every time and that's pretty much all I want to do when I get out there. Give our team a chance to win a game. That's my focus and that's what I want to do, go out there and throw as deep as I can in the game. There are games were don't have good command and your stuff isn't that great and you try to limit the damage."

However, it wasn't just the outstanding pitching of Randy Wolf. When Buffalo's bats exploded in the third inning, they didn't look back.

Following an error scored newcomer Jon Berti in the first inning, the Herd's bats ignited in the third. After Dalton Pompey and Berti each singled to start the inning, International League hits leader Matt Hague then hit an RBI single to shallow left center field, scoring Pompey to give Buffalo a 2-0 lead. A batter later, Alex Hassan added another singled to center field to score Buffalo's second run of the inning. That set up for Melky Mesa's three-run blast, 411 feet. Mesa's homer was his fourth of the year, bumping the lead to 6-0.

The Bisons finished off the scoring in the fourth inning off of a sacrifice fly from Hassan to extending the lead to 7-0.

When it comes to big leads, like the one seen on Monday night, Wolf enjoys that. "It gives you the freedom to be aggressive and make them hit the ball," Wolf said of pitching with a big lead. "Because you kinda know if they hit a solo home run it's not a big deal. Even if they hit a two-run home run. When you've got a seven-run lead it gives you the freedom to be more aggressive and throw in the zone and get a lot of the plate. That gets you a lot of strikes."

BISONS NOTES:

INF LUKE SCOTT was placed on the disabled list on Sunday. Scott has a .246 average and 24 RBI through 45 games for the Herd this season...INF JON BERTI was promoted from New Hampshire (AA) prior to Monday's game, where Berti went 1-4.
