Micah Johnson Named IL Batter of the Week
July 20, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Charlotte Knights News Release
(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - Charlotte 2B Micah Johnson, who hit .500 (10-for-20) with seven runs scored, one triple, one home run, two RBIs, and four stolen bases over the four-game week, has been named as the International League's Batter of the Week for the period of July 16-19, as announced by the International League of Professional Baseball Clubs, Inc. this morning. Johnson is the second Knights player in as many weeks to win a weekly honor from the International League. RHP Kyle Drabek won the award for the period of July 6-12.
In a shortened week due to the Triple-A Baseball All-Star break, Johnson excelled in his four games with the Knights. The 24-year-old had at least two hits in each of his four games, including two three-hit games (July 16 and July 19). On Sunday, Johnson went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and a stolen base. He has hit safely in 13 of his last 16 games.
For the season, Johnson is hitting .326 (75-for-230) with 42 runs scored, 13 doubles, two triples, six home runs, 28 RBIs, and 24 stolen bases in 56 games. During the month of July (17 games), the Indianapolis, IN native is hitting .395 (30-for-76) with 21 runs scored, six doubles, two triples, three home runs, 10 RBIs, and nine stolen bases. Johnson is a former ninth round selection of the Chicago White Sox in the 2012 draft. He hit .270 (20-for-74) in 27 games with the White Sox earlier this season.
Overall, Johnson is the fourth Knights player to be honored with a weekly award this season joining infielder Carlos Sanchez (April 13-19 & April 27-May 3), RHP Erik Johnson (June 15-21), and RHP Kyle Drabek (July 6-12). Sanchez, who is now with the White Sox, earned IL Batter of the Week honors twice this year while with Charlotte.
The first place Charlotte Knights open a four-game series against the Durham Bulls tonight from BB&T Ballpark. Gates open at 6:00 p.m. for the 7:05 p.m. game against the Triple-A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays. Single-game tickets for all games this season are available by phone at 704-274-8282, in person at the BB&T Ballpark Ticket Office, or online at charlotteknights.com.
