Gwinnett Stripers News Release
ROCHESTER, NY - The Gwinnett Braves (47-48), behind the pitching of right-handed starter Kanekoa Texeira, beat the Rochester Red Wings (51-45) by a 6-3 score Monday night in the opener of the four-game series at Frontier Field.
Texeira (W, 1-3) went 6.2 innings with two hits, three earned runs, three walks and two strikeouts. At one time he retired 12 batters in a row. He gave up two hits in the bottom of the second but did not allow another the rest of the way until he was lifted in the bottom of the seventh.
The only run Texeira gave up was a lead-off, solo home run to Reynaldo Rodriguez in the second inning to give Rochester a 1-0 lead.
But Gwinnett snatched the lead back in the top of the third, as back-to-back singles by Todd Cunningham and Mycal Jones put two on with no outs. A groundout to second by Eric Young, Jr. moved the runners to second and third, and Adonis Garcia drove both in with a single to right off of Rochester left-handed starter Taylor Rogers for a 2-1 lead.
The G-Braves broke open the close game with a big top of the seventh. Cedric Hunter and Sean Kazmar greeted Rogers with back-to-back singles to begin the inning and both moved up one base on a sac bunt by Daniel Castro. Rochester opted to intentionally walk Cunningham to load the bases and set up a potential double play. Jones spoiled the strategy with an infield single that plated both Hunter and Kazmar for a 4-1 lead.
Young then singled to right-center field to score Cunningham from second and push the lead to 5-1. Jones, who moved to third on the hit, was knocked in on a sacrifice fly to center by Jose Peraza to make it 6-1.
In the bottom of the seventh, Texeira walked two men and was pulled with two outs in favor of right-handed reliever Brandon Cunniff. He gave up a bloop triple down the right field line to Eric Farris, scoring both runners to cut the lead to 6-3. But the G-Braves' bullpen duo of lefty Matt Marksberry (H, 1) and righty Ryan Kelly (S, 7) shut the door after that.
Cunniff worked 0.1 of an inning with two hits allowed. Marksberry pitched 1.0 inning with one hit. Kelly went 1.0 inning
Rogers (L, 7-7) worked 6.2 innings with eight hits, six earned runs, two walks and three strikeouts. Right-hander Cole Johnson pitched 0.2 of an inning, gave up two hits and struck out one. Righty Mark Hamburger went 1.2 innings with one hit and two strikeouts.
Jones, Hunter, Kazmar and Peraza were each 2-for-4 in the win for Gwinnett. Jones drove in two runs and scored twice. Peraza extended his hitting streak to eight games and delivered his 33rd multi-hit game.
The Red Wings were led by Rodriguez, who was 2-for-3 with a solo homer and two runs scored.
The G-Braves and Red Wings meet in game two of the series at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday night at Frontier Field. Atlanta Braves' right-hander Williams Perez (2-1, 1.23) will be making his second rehab start with Gwinnett. The Red Wings will go with righty Tyler Duffy (4-4, 2.24). Tony Schiavone has the call beginning at 6:30 p.m. on 97.7 FM and WSBRadio.com.
