July 20, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Syracuse Mets News Release
The Syracuse Chiefs are pleased to announce that Washington Nationals outfielder Jayson Werth will join the team Monday on an upcoming rehab assignment. Werth will join Syracuse for the first game of a four-game set on the road against the Buffalo Bisons, Monday night at 7:05. Werth is currently working his way back from the Nationals' Disabled List for the second time this season after suffering a fractured left wrist on May 15th.
Werth, 36, is batting .208 in 27 games for the Nationals this season. Last season, Werth hit .292 with Washington with an on-base percentage of .394 in 147 games. He also slugged 16 home runs and drove in 82 RBIs. Werth led Washington in on base percentage and walks (83) and ranked ninth in the National League in batting average (.292).
A 13-year Major-League veteran, Werth owns a career batting average of .274 with 188 total home runs and 671 runs batted in. He has played for three other teams; the Toronto Blue Jays (2002-03), the Los Angeles Dodgers (2004-05) and the Philadelphia Phillies (2007-10). Werth was part of the 2008 World Series champion Philadelphia Phillies and was named a Major-League All-Star for the Phillies in 2009. In the postseason for Washington, Werth hit a walk-off, ninth-inning home run for the Nationals in Game Four of the 2012 National League Division Series against Lance Lynn of the St. Louis Cardinals.
2015 will mark Werth's fourth year with the Chiefs. He played for Syracuse in 191 games between 2002 and 2003, while the Chiefs were the Triple-A affiliate of the Blue Jays. Werth also appeared in seven games with Syracuse in 2012 on a Major-League rehab assignment with Washington.
Syracuse is currently on the road for a seven-game trip to Buffalo (four games) and Lehigh Valley (three games). The Chiefs return home Monday, July 27th for a 7:05 date with Buffalo. Tickets are available at 474-7833, online at syracusechiefs.com or in person at the stadium ticket office.
