Rochester Red Wings News Release
The Gwinnett Braves used a four-run seventh inning to break open a tight game, leading to a 6-3 win over the Rochester Red Wings Monday night at Frontier Field. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre also lost Monday, so the first place Wings maintain their half-game lead.
The series continues Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m., with a Christmas in July promotion and a Fan 4-Pack Night with four tickets, hot dogs, drinks and a yearbook for $36 ($40 day of game) Complete promotion details below...
After a scoreless first inning, Reynaldo Rodriguez put the Wings on the board in the bottom of the second with a home run off Braves starter Kanekoa Texeira. It was the ninth home of the season for Rodriguez, and gave Rochester a 1-0 lead.
Gwinnett fought back in the top of the third with back-to-back singles to put runners on base with no outs. Starter Taylor Rogers retired the next two batters via ground out and fly out, but surrendered a bases-clearing single to Adonis Garcia that put the Braves on top, 2-1. The Wings' lefty forced a fly out to end the inning.
Rogers and Texeira battled one another inning by inning. Texiera set down 12 straight Wings at one point, and Rogers allowed just one base runner over three innings after the third. Rogers benefited from a web gem by Danny Ortiz in the top of the sixth, reaching out for a fly ball on the run to take away a potential extra base hit.
The Wings' starter faced pressure in the top of the seventh, allowing base hits to the first two batters of the inning. Rogers collected the first out as Daniel Castro moved both runners over with a sacrifice bunt. After an intentional walk to Todd Cunningham, Mycal Jones followed with a two-RBI infield single, on a ball that Jorge Polanco made a diving stop on. The runs extended the Braves' lead to 4-1. The Braves continued to pour it on as Eric Young Jr. singled on a line drive to center, scoring Cunningham and making it 5-1. Gwinnett collected one more run from a Jose Peraza sacrifice fly, pushing Jones across to put the Braves up 6-1.
Rogers' night was over after 6 2/3 innings, having allowed eight hits, six earned runs, and two walks. The six runs were the most allowed by Rogers in a game this season. Rogers (7-7) struck out three and threw 102 pitches, 67 for strikes. Cole Johnson took over for the Wings and got the final out of the inning.
Rochester pressured Texeira in the bottom of the seventh as Rodriguez collected a lead off walk. After a popout and fly out, Doug Bernier took first base on a two out walk that forced the Gwinnett starter to hand the ball to reliever Brandon Cunniff. Eric Farris smacked a double down the right field line, scoring Rodriguez and Bernier to close the lead to 6-3.
Texeira (1-3) pitched 6 2/3 innings, giving up two hits, three earned runs, three walks, with two strikeouts. He threw 99 pitches for 55 strikes.
Mark Hamburger struck out two and allowed one hit in 1 2/3 relief innings.
In the bottom of the ninth, left fielder Cedric Hunter made a leaping catch to take a home run away from Jose Martinez. Ryan Kelly worked the ninth inning, picking his seventh save.
The Braves out-hit the Wings 11-5.
