Syracuse Mets News Release
Buffalo, NY (July 20, 2015) - The Syracuse Chiefs dropped the first game of a four-game series, 7-0, at Coca-Cola Field in Buffalo Monday night. Melky Mesa hit a three-run home run off P.J. Walters to cap a five-run third inning and lift the Bisons to victory.
Buffalo (48-48) started the scoring in the first. Jon Berti was hit by a pitch by Syracuse starter P.J. Walters with one out. Matt Hague then hit a ground ball to third base. Jason Martinson tried to start a double play at second base, but his throw was late. Second baseman Chris Nelson then threw high to first, trying to get Hague, and the ball bounced into the Bisons dugout. With the ball out of play, Berti was advanced two bases, scoring on the throwing error to give Buffalo the early lead at 1-0.
Syracuse (38-59) surrendered the game's big inning in the third. Dalton Pompey and Berti each singled to start the inning. Hague then singled in Pompey to give Buffalo a 2-0 lead. A batter later, Alex Hassan singled to center field to bring home a second run of the inning and third of the game. That preceded Mesa's fourth home run of the year to stretch the lead to 6-0.
The Bisons finished off the scoring in the fourth. Pompey doubled with one out, and scored three batters later on Hassan's sacrifice fly to bump the score to 7-0.
Left-hander Randy Wolf picked up the victory for Buffalo. He struck out nine batters in seven and two-thirds innings, with the Chiefs picking up four hits and one walk.
Syracuse and Buffalo return to Coca-Cola Field Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. Bruce Billings is slated to start for the Chiefs. The Bisons are scheduled to throw Joel Piniero.
