Portland Winterhawks News Release

The Portland Winterhawks will open the 2011-12 season on Friday, September 23 against the Everett Silvertips on a night when they will raise banners to the rafters commemorating last season's Western Conference championship and U.S. Division title.

That contest will open the 72-game 2011-12 season, with the full schedule having been released today (a printable schedule is attached to the e-mail).

Of the team's 36 home games, a total of 24 will be played on weekends, with 11 Friday games, nine Saturday games and four Sunday games. In addition, the Winterhawks will play two holiday Monday afternoon matinees: January 16 (Martin Luther King, Jr. Day) and February 20 (Presidents' Day). Among the weekend games will be the annual New Year's Eve game against the Seattle Thunderbirds on Saturday, December 31.

Below are other highlights of the 2011-12 schedule:

* The team has two five-game homestands: Oct. 8 - 18 and Dec. 28 - Jan. 6

* The longest road trip will be a nine-game trip from Oct. 21 - Nov. 5. That trip will encompass six games against the Central Division and conclude with a game in Kamloops and two in Kelowna

* Included in that road trip is a rematch of the 2011 WHL Finals on Oct. 29 when the Winterhawks travel to Cranbrook, B.C. to take on the Kootenay Ice

* The six teams in the WHL's East Division will come through Portland this season, with home games against Prince Albert (Oct. 8), Brandon (Oct. 15), Saskatoon (Oct. 18), Regina (Nov. 22), Swift Current (Nov. 27) and Moose Jaw (Jan. 3)

* The Winterhawks will make their first trip to Victoria, B.C. since 1994 when they take on the Victoria Royals on Mar. 14 and 16. The Royals are in Portland on Dec. 28 and 30.

* The team will play three games in three nights on three occasions this season: Sept. 23-25, Oct. 7-9 and Mar. 2-4

* The regular season finale will be a home game on Sunday, Mar. 18 vs. Seattle.

The Winterhawks are planning on playing approximately half their games at the Rose Garden, and that schedule will be finalized when the Portland Trail Blazers' schedule is released.
