Winning Streak Comes to An End in 3-1 Loss at Wichita.
January 22, 2018 - ECHL (ECHL) - Colorado Eagles News Release
WICHITA, KS. - The Colorado Eagles eight-game winning streak was brought to a halt in a 3-1 loss to the Wichita Thunder on Saturday. Thunder forward Ralph Cuddemi scored a pair of goals in the contest, including the game-winner, while goalie Shane Starrett stopped 32 of the 33 shots he faced in the winning effort.
Wichita would claim a 1-0 lead just 7:35 into the contest when forward Shaquille Merasty snapped a wrister from the right wing boards that would beat Eagles goalie Joe Cannata to give the Thunder the early advantage. The tally was Merasty's first goal and first point as a professional.
After trailing by a single goal after 20 minutes of play, Colorado would tie the game at the 14:09 mark of the second period when forward Jake Marchment snagged a rebound on top of the crease and fed the puck into the back of the net to knot the score at 1-1.
With time winding down in the middle frame, Wichita would reclaim the lead when Cuddemi raced down the right wing before wrapping behind the Eagles net and pushing the puck past Cannata to put the Thunder on top 2-1 with only 12 seconds remaining in the period.
Heading into the third period of play Cuddemi would strike again, this time threading a shot past Cannata on a breakaway to put the Thunder up 3-1 at the 4:54 mark of the period. Colorado would pull Cannata in favor of the extra attacker with just over four minutes remaining in regulation, but would not be able to draw any closer, falling by a final score of 3-1.
The Eagles finished the night going 0-for-4 on the power play, while the Thunder finished 0-for-1 on the man-advantage. Wichita finished the evening by outshooting Colorado by a final count of 35-33.
