Chesapeake Baysox News Release

BOWIE, Md. - Robbie Widlansky hit a pinch-hit two-run home run in the top of the 11th inning to help the Baysox win 5-3 and complete a four-game sweep of the Altoona Curve on the road Monday afternoon. With the win, the Baysox have won six straight and are 47-41 on the season, which puts them in a second place tie with Richmond.

The Baysox swept a four-game series on the road for the first time since July 26 - 29, 2007 when they won four straight games in Binghamton. The Baysox have won a season-high six consecutive road games.

The Baysox scored three runs in the top of the first inning and then were largely shut down by the Curve until adding two more runs in the final inning of the game to win. Bowie recorded double-digit hits for the fourth straight game, but struggled with runners in scoring position. As a team, the Baysox were just 3-for-13 with runners in scoring position and they left runners stranded in six different innings.

The Baysox got off to a fast start in the top of the first inning against Altoona starter Phil Irwin. With one out, second baseman Greg Miclat singled to shortstop and with two outs, first baseman Joe Mahoney singled to left field. Catcher Caleb Joseph was hit by a pitch to load the bases and third baseman Buck Britton cleared the bases with a single to left field that put the Baysox up 3-0. The Baysox were aided by a throwing error by left fielder Andrew Lambo allowing the third run to score and moving Britton to second.

Altoona got one run back in the bottom of the fourth inning against left-handed starter Mike Ballard. Kris Watts hit a lead off single to center field and with one out, Andrew Lambo hit a ground rule double to left-center field that moved Watts to third base. Brad Chalk grounded out to second base, but Watts scored on the play to make the score 3-1.

The Curve added another run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Josh Rodriguez hit a lead off home run to left field to make the score 3-2.

Right-handed reliever Eddie Gamboa replaced Ballard for the bottom of the seventh inning and surrendered one run that allowed Altoona to tie the game. Brad Chalk hit a lead off triple and after Jose Hernandez was hit by a pitch, Matt Curry plated Hernandez though he grounded into a double play.

The Baysox broke the tie in the top of the 11th inning against Curve reliever Michael Dubee. Britton hit a lead off double to center field. Florimon grounded out and moved Britton to third base before Widlansky, who pinch-hit for designated hitter Brandon Waring, hit a home run to left field to put the Baysox up 5-3. It was the team's first pinch-hit home run of the season.

Ballard pitched six innings and allowed two runs on five hits while striking out four, but he did not factor into the decision. Gambo pitched two innings in relief of Ballard and allowed one run on one hit while striking out one batter. Right-handed reliever Armando Gabino earned the win as he pitched scoreless ninth and 10th innings and right-handed reliever Brandon Cooney earned his third save of the season with a scoreless 11th inning to finish the game.

The Baysox stole three bases in the game and stole a total of 10 bases in the four game series as they were not afraid to run against the Curve catchers. Miclat led the way with four stolen bases and increased his season total to 31.

Britton provided a spark for the Baysox offense as he recorded his first three hit game of the season with Bowie. He also added two RBIs and scored a run of his own to help the Baysox win a tight game.

The All-Star break begins Tuesday, July 12, but Bowie is back home Thursday, July 14 for a four game home stand against the Richmond Flying Squirrels. The home stand features exciting promotions including, Tats and Bats Night Thursday, July 14, Fireworks Friday, July 15, Superhero Night and Fireworks Saturday, July 16, and Scrubs Sunday, July 16.
